Can anyone recommend a portable backup and editing device that I can use on a photography trip to Icleand in March? I found the GNARBIX on B&H where reviews were good. My small laptop I used last in 2019 is a windows 7 device that was slow than and obsolete now. My goal.is to backup and view pictures addi.g as little weight to the camera bag as possible. I plan to have 6 SD cards with me for the 8 day trip to Iceland. Want to protect my experience!. The group has been very helpful in preparing me for my trip. Thanks in advance for any input.

tons of choices on Amazon; I would suggest getting one that has multiple connection cores; they often store in or around the unit - makes life easier

my mistake: i misread your request - thought you meant a battery backup unit; what I suggested still applies, though

Choose whatever size you need. I never use disk based backup anymore. The SSD's are far faster, no moving parts and powered via the USB connection - so also the simplest possible to use.

Last year, on a trip to Israel, I down loaded my photos to my iPad than uploaded them to the cloud and copied them to an external SSD

That might not be required, there is a free version of Windows 10 that runs on the Pi and, IIRC, a version of Linux. Given that, you might even find a version of COBOL that you could run

There have been several attempts to market a device that you describe. If such a device were economically feasible it would be widely used today. Memory cards are cheap methods of storage. SD cards are available in some convenience stores. Now your big decision is "large" capacity or "small." I have no idea of what the failure rate of SD cards is but I use 8 and 16 MB CF cards in my cameras and have never lost photos to defective cards. If storage figures are of critical importance you might try the micro SD cards with much more capacity and same physical size.

"I've used a WD My Passport Wireless Pro on several occasions."
I checked- B+H no longer carry them, WD no longer has them on their website for sale, they do have a description of them but also say their product support will end 12-31-24. Amazon shows them but no pricing.
This is a great idea, how hard can it be to make such an item? It would save so much weight and space and not require an additional HD or computer. Can't find a comparable product.

they now have SSD versions of this, but are fairly expensive; you can find old and new on eBay - I bought one there

Yes, very expensive for the amount of storage, either hd or ssd.. CDW lists a 1tb hd model for $139 with a 4-6 week wait.

I’ve used my iPad for years now, and it works great. The only lesson learned is that when I edit on the iPad, the size of the file is greatly reduced. So now, I avoid doing that, and wait till back home to do even basic editing such as crop, lighten, darken. And the iPad is of course used for other things, such as email while away.

I use a Samsung Portable T5 SSD to backup while on trips. Works very well.

I have the WD WiFi My Passport and it’s great but they don’t make it any more. Your best option now is a NewQ FileHub, (formerly RAVPower), and a portable SSD drive. As for editing, if I want something quick for Social Media I’ll use LR in my phone. For more in depth editing I either bring my laptop or wait until I get back home.

How do you copy to the SSD’s?

I carry a WD (Western Digital) portable for backup in the field. It has a rechargeable self-contained battery that seems to have long life and, in my opinion, has been an outstanding unit. Purchased at B&H. Pop the SD card in it and it starts to backup on its own. it also works wirelessly or wired with a computer. You can't edit on it, but my concern is just to backup.
