Can anyone recommend a portable backup and editing device that I can use on a photography trip to Icleand in March? I found the GNARBIX on B&H where reviews were good. My small laptop I used last in 2019 is a windows 7 device that was slow than and obsolete now. My goal.is to backup and view pictures addi.g as little weight to the camera bag as possible. I plan to have 6 SD cards with me for the 8 day trip to Iceland. Want to protect my experience!. The group has been very helpful in preparing me for my trip. Thanks in advance for any input.

Buy more SD cards. Use a new one daily. Get the device that lets you upload the card to your phone or tablet just to be certain you got photos on the card. Or use two simultaneous cards each day. Keep them in one or two safe places than you can remember. Edit at home.

It’s less expensive initially to just buy extra memory cards for your camera. Over time a portable device will save you some cash. If you still want a portable hard drive, you can find them with a simple search. This page gives you some choices and they’re available at Amazon.

RavPower used to make a wireless router/power bank/sd card reader backup for under $100. I have one of them along with a WD My Passport wireless pro. Both work great for transferring SD card contents to a portable HD. The WD has an HD as part of the build, the other requires an external USB drive.

Amazon has the newest iteration of the RavPower, exact same build but different name and a higher mAh.

On extended trips, I download the SD card and reuse them. I keep the CF cards as an original backup (I shoot raw to both SD and CF cards normally) The SD cards I use a reformatted one daily and the CF card until it's full before changing out.

Editing is a different story and i personally don't do it while on the road unless required for some reason. When that happens, I use either a tablet or laptop using PSCC, DXO and Topaz products.

Use two cards in your camera, or, if you don't have two cards, pray each and every night while your on vacation.

I use either my phone or tablet (both Samsung) with an on the go plug that has slots for an SD card and USB-A. I put may card in and attach a 1TB portable SSD and use the file manager from the phone to transfer my pictures each night. I have 2 SSD and I backup each SD card twice. It is light weight and small. I only reformat my cards when they are full. Also, I try to keep the two SSD in separate locations. This and similar methods have worked for me for at least 10 years and twice alerted me to a bad SD card.

I'd really like to find a self-contained self-powered backup HD or SSD that will accept SD and /or CF cards without adapters or need for computers/phones/etc. WD used to make one but I read it had a lot of problems and I don't think it is currently available. Any other alternatives?

I've used a WD My Passport Wireless Pro on several occasions. It's self contained, has SD card slot and I have set it so that it automatically copies contents of the card when the card is inserted. Have never lost an image and transfer to my desk top is fairly quick with a cable.

Remember to use <quote reply> for directed responses.

With SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SD cards selling for about $13 / card, it's probably most economical to just take extra cards.

Relatives who are a bit more into tech, and with more spare time, than I, have been pushing me to find a Raspberry Pi and program it to read data from one port and store it through another.

They say it is very simple, I disagree, but the Pi units are small, can work off batteries, and not very expensive.

I keep the idea in mind, but it is not my first choice. Costco had older (9th gen) iPads on sale before Xmas. I found a hub that has USB-A and card slots. That should cover things without me learning another programming language.
