Number 2, I like it because your eyes move in the scene.

Second follows the rule of thirds, my choice.

First of all I want to thank each of you for the votes and constructive comments. Everyone has been taken to heart and I've even tried a couple different crops and enhancements from the suggestions here. I probably should have posted this in a different section, and if the admin wants to move it there, I understand. Not to beat a dead horse too much longer, here is my last attempt.

Rule of thirds seems to work?

I like the second with a condition. The placement of the cactus in the center of the first picture is not the best place. The second shot has the cactus off the right a bit and then a crop leaving cactus in that placement would make a better image, IMHO.

I still like #2 of the first ones you posted. The first one on the second set looks overcooked and I like the right-hand position of the cactus. In the US/English-speaking world, we read left to right so our inclination is to look at things left to right. While there may not be distinctive leading lines as such (although you could consider the horizon a leading line) I will naturally scan a shot left to right to see the main theme of the shot which in this case would be the cactus.

I like #2 because it shows more of where the subject is. That one bush on the left gives space and sets the scene.
