This will be a tie vote: one vote for each. To me, each is different but each standing on it own.

I like the second one. It seems more in balance to me.

I see many comments regarding too much sky, but the sky in the desert southwest plays an important part of the scene, IMHO. On the other hand I tried to crop closer to get the cactus more prominent with the hint of the barbed wire fence close by. Barbed wire also plays an important part in the SW.

My thoughts exactly -- that is why I said it gave a better sense of location. I like the fence and the sky, and the brush off to the left. All those elements go together to give me a sense of being out west.

I think the first is more impactful 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞. The big, purple, upper cloud in One frames the composition. In Number Two, zoomed out, we have cactus, orange, purple, orange. IMHO, that orange, upper layer is unnecessary 🙂

Number two all day. If you shoot number one and want number two; just crop and reprint.🙄 Same logic for rule of thirds.

I very much prefer the 2nd, slightly off-center composition. The 1st image is way too centered for my liking. Also, the sky and the bushes are more interesting in the 2nd image.

Actually, this appears to be the same image, just cropped two different ways.

I would use Photoshop to clone out what appear to be some barb wire fences.

But viewed at the highest magnification, neither version is particularly sharp. It may be that the Tamron zoom lens is just not up to the demands of a 50MP camera. The lack of sharpness is a little less obvious in the less cropped version of the image... another reason to prefer it.

From a compositional point of view the second image looks better.

I think the sky and the cactus work better together in no.2.

Since the cactus is back-lit, there's no detail and so cropping to show more of the cactus doesn't make sense to me. I like #2 better as it shows more of the surroundings and awesome sky.

Hard to chose. Each has its own strong point. I'll go with #2

the second one. If there were birds in the sky that might make a difference in #1. But the base of that cactus is too close to the bottom of the shot for me. Number 2 is framed better.

I like the second one because the cactus is off-center and the sky is very nice and I like seeing more of it. It also gives me a better sense of the area in which the photo was made.

I'm with Bridges for exactly the reasons he lists.
