The seller has full responsibility in this situation; the carrier is "hired" by the seller to deliver the package, and insurance claims must run through the seller.

Nope.

No seller takes responsibility for the carrier...man...I'd love to sit in on that contract negotiation.

Buyer is accepting the terms of the carrier ... the option always offered is insurance.
The buyer either takes the insurance or not.

Now if the seller would be responsible for the carrier's errors...

No one would ever buy insurance...but we do.

General rule is...anything international...get the insurance.

I've had issues with every carrier. Stuff gets left next door, across the street, two doors down, etc. As far as I know, we've never had a porch pirate problem here. :knock on wood: My son in Pittsburgh hasn't been so fortunate, recently a large box of duck breasts disappeared somewhere, the delivery service said it got 'lost'. Someone had a nice dinner, we suspect.

But I've also had issues with the sender writing the address wrong, and that's something you might be able to check with USPS.

Yes, until consequences are too harsh to risk the action it will never end. Good luck with your resolution. I think the seller is out of the loop since it was properly shipped and arrived. One inconvenient solution is to pay for signature required delivery so someone has to receive and sign for whatever it is.

That won't necessarily resolve the issue. I got a new camera from Adorama a few weeks ago, and it shipped UPS "signature required for delivery". I was waiting on delivery, and happened to see the UPS truck going down the street, away from my house (I live on a cul-de-sac). Went outside, and the box was sitting on the front porch. Didn't knock, ring the doorbell, or anything. Just left it. I'm guessing the driver scribbled something illegible for the "required signature".

Go to post office,
Long story short delivered to my neighbor (per GPS on mail truck)
Trust my neighbor, he did get it, must have gotten porch pirated
eBay denied any claim, seller won't communicate
Post office said to file clam but need the sellers name and address to do so
Home owners needs a police report and has 500 deductible
Filed a claim with Mastercard see what happens
Purchased camera $778.00 br Shipped with tracking ... (show quote)

Exact reason I trust UHH for buying, also KEH, MPB, B&H, and Adorama. Also using PP will insure a positive outcome although you may have to jump through a couple of hoops and wait three weeks for resolution.

You have it backwards; the seller is responsible for contracting the shipper, and making insurance claims with the shipper if anything goes wrong.

And that is why credit card companies will reverse charges if the buyer does not get the item.

I couldn't agree with you more. Porch pirating is an epidemic!

As long as these district attorneys are soft on crime this will continue. I believe in King Hammubari's code an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth. In the case of stolen items off a porch when they are caught cut off one hand.

sorry, I never felt this way in the past but enough is enough.

Hammurabi's code wasn't a prescribed penalty, it gave the maximum penalty. If the perpetrator put out your eye, the most severe punishment allowed would be to put out his eye.

Sorry to hear. Happens occasionally. Good luck sorting out.

That’s crazy. eBay claims they will cover all issues, particularly when a seller is non-responsive. I bought a futon from a vendor that UPS delivered to the wrong address. It was never recovered, but was insured and the vendor sent me another one.

The bottom line is the delivery company is 100% responsible. They didn’t deliver to the address on the label, per their gps.
You’re not required to go searching where they delivered it to.
I ordered a computer from Costco one time and FedEx delivered to the wrong address one time.
I called FedEx and they said the driver told them he left it at the yellow house. I was inside of a commercial building that was not yellow. I told the lady on the phone I would go try to find it. She told me no that’s not my responsibility. She told me the driver left of it and address other than the label and they are responsible for it.

Don’t accept anything less. It’s not the sellers fault. Although he should have insured it. Claiming it with your credit card is a good option but you need to demand the shipper Take responsibility.

I live in a 6-unit (condo) apartment building. It seems that people don't shop in stores anymore. Every day, more parcels are stacked up in the hallway, on the street in front of the building, and hanging on door knobs. They can be easily pirated. When I see them, I usually I will bring them in and place them in front of the addressee's door or, at least place them in the lobby behind the security door.

This is just plain STUPID for valuable merchandise- I can not find polite words for this trend!

Usually, I can obtain whatever I need photographically, however, if I order any kind of equipment from an online source, a dealer in a differet town or country, or any kind of buy-and-sell operation, I will pay the extra points to have it delivered by a courier or parcel service as "SIGNATURE REQUIRED". If I am not at home or at the studio, the driver will leave a notice and I will pick the item up athe post office or the depot and SIGN FOR IT! I have to show my ID!

Some shippers will not even use very protective packaging. They just throw the items in an envelope that is lightly padded with bubble -wrap. One of my young staff members received a lens that he ordered through eBay and found it on his doorstep, in a thin cardboard box, blurred in the snow! If that's not STUPID, what is?

My studio is in an industrial park We get deliveries from UPS and FedEx. USPS via Canada Post Corporation, Purolator, and many other local delivery services. Someof the drivers and postal carriers are very competent and responsible. They know most of the clients on their routes. They will make certain parcels that are pick up are properly wrapped and labeled, some carry additionl packing tape, etc, and many will make sure parcels are not left unattended in vulnerable places. Some, unfortunately, are just plain lazy and STUPID!

It's come to a point, what with all the horror stories, I won't even mail an important letter without a tracking number. Certified and registered mail is getting expensive, but it beats the aggravation and expense of important remittances or tax documents getting lost in the mail.

A $750 camera, left on a doorstep- what's wrong with that picture? ...to boot, it was the wrong doorstep! Our pizza delivery guy has more sense than that! ...and he hasn't even learned to speak English yet!

Well, at least, our waste collection recycling service has given us an additional extra-large bin for all the AMAZON boxes! Save the environment!

If the seller would communicate the buyer could file a claim with USPS. The buyer needs the address of the shipper/seller to file the claim

Unfortunately even when a parcel is shipped with an adult signature required the delivery person (my experiences with FedEx) will dump and run and input a signature into their little computer. It's happened to me at least twice where they even got my first initial wrong. Called FedEx -- yeah, "we'll look into it and get back to you" .. NOT!

Heh, only thing I might give my postman is a road map.
