You could drive up to Jerome, AZ. It’s a picturesque mountainside town between Sedona and Prescott.

Going to Phoenix, AZ in February is a good idea. Going to Phoenix, AZ in August is not a good idea for it is even too hot for the Devil to visit.

Besides the Desert Botanical Gardens, I would suggest Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Superior, about an hour from PHX. The Superstition mountains can be photogenic, in Apache Junction, 20-25 mins from PHX. If you are in AJ (Apache Junction) take the Apache Trail Arizona HWY 88, past Tortilla Flats to the end of the road, there is parking and a paved trail in a very nice area, adjacent to Fish Creek Road. South Mountain gives a good view of PHX. Fountain Hills is a nice place , Phoenix Art Museum is really good .

Finally, if you like your Mexican food on the New Mexican (hot) side, visit Los Dos Molinos, in Mesa. My favorite, order the Ribs.
Besides the Desert Botanical Gardens, I would sugg... (show quote)

Another vote for the Desert Botanical Garden and Apache Junction trail. If you can get to Tucson, the Arizona Desert Museum in the Saugaro National Park, west side.

Check out the (relatively) new Musical Instruments Museum. I'm not a musician, but the collections are very impressive. Reserve on line and I recommend at least half a day to see it. Carefree is just to the north, and has a very large sundial in the town square and beautiful homes built into the red rock hills. There is also a big artists' collaborative gallery in a permanent tent on the way to Carefree.

Old Town Scottsdale has much to shoot - just walk around. For something different, try AZ88 for lunch - it’s also photogenic. Wright’s Taliasin West is worth a visit. Others have mentioned the Botanical Gardens. If you drive to Sedona, or worse, the GC you’ll spend half+ of your visit on the road. Ditto with Tucson and I don’t know where San Antonio came from.

This guy is on target. Taliesin West is off Shea Blvd and Frank Lloyd Wright. It is immensely interesting. The restaurant AZ88 is situated in a downtown Scottsdale Mall that has lakes, sculpture, and flower blooms that are outstanding. Phoenix desert Botanical Gardens are in the most interesting geologic formation you will see. Plus the hiking there is fun!

My first thought is visiting Sedona.

Sedona in February is GRIDLOCK. Spring break time and terribly overcrowded.
I live there and refuse to go into town (parking lot) during that time.

If you have time, go to the Grand Canyon and take a helicopter ride. We did and it was terrific. We also spent time in Sedona, many tours to take and beautiful area to photograph.

We are going to try to get to San Antonio this winter. Any suggestions for us? Thinking about driving to Corpus christi or the hill country to explore also. Enjoy your trip!

Neither of which are in Phoenix...?

Within the city, should you enjoy scenic views and a little exercise, is Piestewa Peak. The trails are pretty decent and once at the top, you have a nice 360° view of the city and valley. The hike is not real challenging and you are rewarded with scenic views along the way.

I'd echo the suggestions for Taleasin West and the Botanical Garden for landscape shots but if you really want something unique and are in town in Early Feb, the Heard Museum, which was mentioned by another poster, has two days of a Navajo Hoop Dance Festival which would provide some amazing action..other events may also be held in Feb...
