Hi! This is the first time I've posted here. These are my pet rats, Shira and Chava. Shira, who has a blaze on her forehead, is incredibly intelligent, mischievous, affectionate, and her favorite hobby is shredding paper. Chava has amazing curly whiskers, is laid-back, calm, very gentle, rather vain, and her favorite hobbies are sleeping and bathing herself.

How lovely of you to take care of your neighbor's pet rats! It's great that you see all their positive qualities. Hmmm - do you live near me? I'm going out of state for a conference at the end of February, and I need a rat-sitter. :)

I'm up in NJ, but if I did live close I'd definitely volunteer. Good luck in finding a sitter.

Oh, wow, I used to live in NYC. I don't any more. I think I've found a sitter... a family that has 5-year-old twins and a 7-year old, who ADORE my rats!

Why is it that a typical gray rat looks so repulsive while a white or otherwise colored rat looks so pet worthy? I used to teach biology way back in the dark ages and the PTA had given us a white rat for our lab. When the kids came to class one of them (almost always a girl) would pull “PT” out of its cage and that rat would be passed from kid to kid all during the class, eventually visiting almost everyone before being returned to its cage before the bell rang. Next period, same thing.

They do make good pets because they are sweet as well as intelligent, but, hey, I totally understand how not everyone loves rats :)

I got introduced to the amazingness of rats in my 10th grade biology class. :) We had two white rats, Adam and Eve. How cool that you were a biology teacher! Actually, typical gray rats look to me just as cute as those fancy ones. I mean - they're still rats. :)
