Your not going to like this but take a look at a smart phone, Samsung 9+. DPreview gave it high marks 85%. It has an adjustable aperture and a telephoto lens, plus you get a GPS so you won't get lost.
400 bucks at Amazon

This is not technically a good photo by any stretch, I snapped it in the dark with only the moon and the tops of the clouds visible. It was dark outside.

The Moon is about 1/3 from the left and 1/3 from the bottom.

I used my Motorola Edge+. 108 mp 13-81mm. The sky was completely dark. It has wide angle, "normal" and telephoto lenses.

Not complaining or . . .

just a thought, have you ever looked at any Ricoh GR. 1,2, or 3 in my opinion the only 2 drawbacks is there no viewfinder, everything is done on the rear screen like live view and a fixed lens, focal length is determined by the model you choose. Hope this helps.

I’ll second that. The current model is the ZS200. A bit bigger than a pack of cigarettes. And has a 1” sensor instead of a 1/2.3.

Are you tempting me to "upgrade" my little pocket pal?

Nah, If I want more, without going full backpack full of lenses etc. I'll just hang my Sony RX10iv around my neck or in the belt pouch for 35mm film camera with a 300 mm lens I have had since, well, according to our youngest, since the "saber tooth" roamed So. California. With the hook type suspenders to help put some weight on the shoulders, it is as easy to move and function as the gear carrier rig I used in the Army.

It depends a lot on what is most important to you. The Fuji is an APS-C model. That sensor is bigger than the M4/3, which in turn is bigger than the 1" of the RX100.
On the other hand, the Fuji has a fixed 23 mm FIXED lens (NO zoom) while those other models mentioned have zoom lenses, some fixed, others are an interchangeable lens camera (ILC). The G100 is an ILC.
As far as pocketable, the G100 or Zfc with lens will probably not be pocketable.
Have you considered the Panasonic Lumix DC-LX100 II ? It is an M4/3 model with a 10.9 to 35mm (35mm Equivalent Focal Length: 24 to 75mm) FIXED zoom lens and is more pocketable than the G100.

Compare all 4 here (I suspect the dimensions on the B&H website for the ILC models are body only):

He shouldn’t have to worry about sensor size. The m4/3 is plenty big enough to make beautiful pics

What kind of phone do you have? Is your current phone nearing its 3 year life expectancy? a few X optical zoom + 40some megapixels allows a great deal of cropping to zoom in once you have the file on your computer.

How many ways are you planning to display the pictures? HD TV? 20x20 paper? UHD TV or Monitor? Tablet? 3 x 5 paper?

To whom do you expect to display the pictures?

Are sales involved?

I want to get a small camera to carry in trouser or jacket pocket. My first choice was the Fujifilm X100V, but it seems that Fujifilm is not making that camera, or even taking orders for it right now.
After considering other cameras I’ve pretty much narrowed down to the M4/3 Panasonic Lumux G100 with the 12-32mm lens and the APS-C Nikon Z fc with the Z DX 16-50mm lens. With a strong lean toward the Panasonic.
I have used a M4/3 camera and lens a couple of time in the past, but I am not very familiar with that system. I would like some insight, from those who used one or both of those cameras, especially the Panasonic.

I wood still go with the Fujifilm X series, those cameras are made the way cameras are supposed to be made...with metal, even the dials are mand from etched metal!

Amen ! I can always sort out the metal camera photos from the plastic. Acoarst Fuji has no choice in the matter cuz the X-Trans sensor requires a metal camera. But then, you already knew that, and it clearly shows in your pix.

Panasonic's pro models are also built with die-cast magnesium alloy chassis. They are mostly metal, extremely rugged, and weather sealed. Our GH models are as rugged as the Nikon F3s I beat the hell out of in the 1980s.

Used to be, I thought Nikons were tanks, Canons were Jeeps, and other cameras were cars. But the industry has changed, and most brands make really solid gear now, at least at the high ends of their ranges.

What are your thoughts on the Panasonic LUMIX GX85 with either the 12–32mm lens or the 14-42mm lens?

Why ask Bill ? $600 for a 2-lens kit. If you dont like it just return it. I bought mine just to get the lenses but the camera proved to be a keeper (and I already had too much m43 gear).

Theres a very important difference between the 12-32 and the 14-42 so study before you buy. The 12-32 lacks any sort of normal MF mode (but Ive always prefered it over the 14-42).

Thank you. I have no real experience with m43 so I need all the info I can get.
