The Toshiba Satellite was purchased new in 2015 and was outstanding. I loved it and even though I bought a new Dell (because Toshiba is not unavailable), I had a new hard drive put in it and rebuilt it for my wife.

We have the cloud, but I still do local backups for recovery expediency. They are unmounted (detached) after I do a backup.

I back up weekly. My external drives all remain OFF until I need them.

I had a pop-up saying something like that about a week ago. My machine was definitely locked - but not totally. I got into Task Manager, and I Ended that notice. It is persistent, though.

This was one of those scams that gives you a phone number to call to solve the problem - pretending not to be a scam.

I do the grandfather/father/son routine.
Every month or so - or when I have something of great value - I do a backup and the most recent one goes in the safe, the second most recent one in the closet and the current on is connected. And I then rotate and make an annual BU that is stored in safe.
All my photos and most important docs are on several backups scattered at different places.
All work emails and files are on work server that is backed up.
I learned the hard way - partition on hard drive crashed and I lost quite a bit.

I'm generally pretty careful on my computer.

A couple of days back I was hit with a ransomware virus that encrypted all my data files. I had 3 backup drives connected by USB and they were encrypted. I was very fortunate in that a week or so earlier I had replaced one of my backup drives with a new 16TB drive, and had a full backup of my system.
...

Did the ransomware spread to any computer on your network or just the attached drives?

Actually, if the external drive is connected to the host, it is not a back up, it is just another drive with duplicate information. It would be the same as installing one large drive and partition it and use one half as primary and copy that half to the other half so both halves would be identical.

Why is it not a backup? (alternate copy)
Would not a second copy (or third) be a backup of the primary files?

Does it not become a backup until it is disconnected?

While it's not good to have a backup in the same box as the original.
What if the box fries or is stolen.
Still a backup though.....

The purpose of a back up is to restore your data if you get a killer virus or someone is holding you for ransom but if it is all active when the event happens it will not serve the purpose of a backup. True if you just screw up and delete something you can use it but it is not a true PC back up. I guess it is in the way you view a back up.

Yup, depends on the interpretation of the definition, and where "elsewhere" is...
"...a copy of computer data taken and stored elsewhere..."
Actually, if the original data is on C: and the backup is on E:, it IS elsewhere,
just not the BEST elsewhere....

If online, it is not a *good, safe* backup. Backups are kept as offline storage to protect against malware and ransomeware. You should have one nearby, another OFF-SITE. Both unplugged.

Like I said, still a backup, just not the best place for it.
(Just don't tell me that a second copy, even if in the same box, is not a backup. Just not a SAFE backup.
Adjective DO come in handy....)

Yea, disconnected. It would require a long data cable to reach off-site (or another part of the house).

It world be preferable to have it on an entirely separate system. I usually use my old computer for that when I build a new one (every 10 years or so). When you’re infected with malware or a virus, it typically inhabits the OS and file system before being written to drives. What you want is to clean the system (OS and FS) and then restore your data from the uninfected drive.
