I'm generally pretty careful on my computer.
A couple of days back I was hit with a ransomware virus that encrypted all my data files. I had 3 backup drives connected by USB and they were encrypted. I was very fortunate in that a week or so earlier I had replaced one of my backup drives with a new 16TB drive, and had a full backup of my system.
I'm still working through the probem.
A couple of cautions... my backup drives were connected 24/7, and they should have been connected when a backup was done. I'm currently looking into cloud storage. My problem could have been a lot worse; I could have lost 30 years of work... saved, just by luck. According to computer experts, there is only about a 60% chance that the ransomware 'thieves' will provide you with a key to decrypt.

Glad you seem to have "recovered". Or at least getting there?
I'm not sure of what material I have lost in the last couple of weeks... mostly design calculations that can be recreated if I need to. I play engineer for a day job. I was really fortunate.
Many years ago I consistently lost data on my back up drives which were externally hard drives. I went to cloud back up; less than a week later I was hit with ransom ware. I wiped my computer clean and started over using what I had saved on the cloud, easy. Now that's the only backup I have.
My backup consisted of 30 years of data... and I have nearly all of it.

We have the cloud, but I still do local backups for recovery expediency. They are unmounted (detached) after I do a backup.

An oversight on my part...

Next time.
Things we don't always anticipate.
My backup drives go in an external dual bay USB dock.
I just remove them from the dock to store them.
So by default they are not in the line of fire.

I once worked for a SW company out of San Jose (Panzura) that used cloud storage (either Amazon or Google) as part of our deliverable. At one of our company wide meetings, one of the founders, started singing “ the cloud is going to save your a$$ one day”. Now you have a real world example of why.

My backup drives are only connected when backing up then turned off.
Internet is hard wired...
Internet is only wired in when I am on the computer...walk away...I break the connection.
Power plug pulled at night as well.
It just solves a lot of problems...easily.
I feel for you! My Toshiba laptop just crashed (hard drive failure) and I had to start over from back up copies and it has been a bear. I still fear cloud storage!

Wow, how old is the Toshiba?
Ours were over 10/12 years of before we replaced them.
Sadly, Toshiba quit making consumer laptops years ago.
Otherwise we would have bought Toshibas for the replacements.
