Really nice work.
Insects are far more highly evolved than most realize.
Mantids & Odonata are the prime predators of their world.
They are perfect 'Engines'.
Thanks, BBurns. They are both my favorites to find on my walkabouts.
Excellent shots and narrative, Gary!

Nice images that I know must take considerable time to produce. Have you ever shown images of your equipment set-up? Interested in getting into this side of photography, so curious what folks are using.

MikeT46, this is the setup that I used for this mantis session. You can see the mantis staged in front of the camera.
There is no need whatsoever to mimic my setup. Actually, many of my sessions are taken with simply a camera mounted on a bellows with a reverse-mounted enlarger lens. I use 50mm and 28mm as my most often go-to lens. These provide a range of magnification from 0.5X up to 6X.
A simple worm-screw manual focus rail will fit the need, which I used for the first two years. I use constant LED lighting and I diffuse it with vellum tracing paper when the subjects are brightly colored.
Thanks for sharing the set-up ... very interesting, as well as quite complex. Looks fun ... I was trained as a microscopist 50 years ago, so your gear looks intriguing to me.
Thanks for viewing, Bubalola
