Really nice work.
Insects are far more highly evolved than most realize.
Mantids & Odonata are the prime predators of their world.
They are perfect 'Engines'.

Thanks, BBurns. They are both my favorites to find on my walkabouts.

Nice images that I know must take considerable time to produce. Have you ever shown images of your equipment set-up? Interested in getting into this side of photography, so curious what folks are using.

MikeT46, this is the setup that I used for this mantis session. You can see the mantis staged in front of the camera.

There is no need whatsoever to mimic my setup. Actually, many of my sessions are taken with simply a camera mounted on a bellows with a reverse-mounted enlarger lens. I use 50mm and 28mm as my most often go-to lens. These provide a range of magnification from 0.5X up to 6X.

A simple worm-screw manual focus rail will fit the need, which I used for the first two years. I use constant LED lighting and I diffuse it with vellum tracing paper when the subjects are brightly colored.

Thanks for sharing the set-up ... very interesting, as well as quite complex. Looks fun ... I was trained as a microscopist 50 years ago, so your gear looks intriguing to me.

Mark suggested that I search my preserved mantis for its "eye brushes" which are located on its front legs above the elbow. He explained to me how they use them to keep their eyes clean and gave me a link that showed me where to look for them.

It took a bit of manipulation of the mantis and I eventually was able to locate it looking through 10X magnification. These hairs are highly specialized; if you look closely, you will see that each hair has bristle-like feathers to brush debris from its eyes.

I staged the Carolina mantis to show its eyes and why keeping them clean is important for an ambush predator such as the mantis.
