Mark suggested that I search my preserved mantis for its "eye brushes" which are located on its front legs above the elbow. He explained to me how they use them to keep their eyes clean and gave me a link that showed me where to look for them.
It took a bit of manipulation of the mantis and I eventually was able to locate it looking through 10X magnification. These hairs are highly specialized; if you look closely, you will see that each hair has bristle-like feathers to brush debris from its eyes.
