Why I despise Apple

I hesitate to enter this discussion/argument of Apple vs PC. I suspect it will go on and on and on. It's clear that those who prefer Apple are religious about their preference and the same seems to be true for PC users. Personally, my wife & I have iPhones, she has an iPad and I have a Windows laptop & desktop. I'm on my desktop 5 - 12 hours a day. I love my desktop. I love my iPhone. My wife seldom uses the iPad, but she is not extremely tech savvy. She does use my desktop occasionally, but I'm always available for support. I'm at her service for all tech issues, including the TV remote. She manages. My sister is a religious Apple user. However, she has very little technical knowledge or proficiency. She's happy, but does not go outside her comfort zone. Most of my friends are PC users. However, some very technically astute friends use Apple products. On UHH, I have learned to trust and listen to a few subscribers for my tech support. (when needed). Personally, I began my computer usage with Basic, DOS, then Win 3.0 and onwards. I have, not easily, given a hand to some Apple users with Macs. I'm a Windows guy and will probably never change my preference. I'm totally comfortable with Windows, have upgraded my PC's, have performed clean installs and recoveries of Windows OS. I seldom have issues with my Windows computers and do not always understand why other's seem to have such complex issues with computers, Apple or Windows. I've had my share of issues, but mostly have solved them on my own. (a few with some assistance)

Here is my opinion about this discussion. One cannot debate, with any real acceptable conclusion, whether peaches are better than grapes. Those are personal preferences and logical discussions about which has more vitamins or are more beneficial to one's health are absurd. No one wins or loses. It is no more valid than a discussion of whose wife, husband or significant other is better.

In conclusion: Please refrain from making disparaging remarks about Macs or Windows PC's in your responses to posts. It really serves no purpose nor is it helpful to our forum or subscribers. Loving your Mac or PC makes sense to you. Please refrain from attempting to convince the "world" to jump on your bandwagon. We seemed to have stopped the constant Nikon vs Canon arguments. What you love is your own personal emotional preference. That's it!!

I'm done ranting!
Be well,
Mark

Yeah, but the Compaq used proprietary, rather than off-the-shelf parts.

Hey all you guys who say Mac users are religious fanatics is like saying all conservatives are Trump fanatics. It just isn't true.
There are many people like myself who have no love for mac "what so ever" but we are stuck. You PC people, dig out your receipts and add them up, everything including software. Thats total is not chump change. How many people can afford to throw away what they now have and then invest the amount of money that you have in your gear plus the time to learn the new system?
I'm saying the cult of Mac is way smaller than you believe.

I am a PC user but I don't have much invested in it. If I switch the money isn't bad. Just that I think I would have a hard time doing what I need/want to do with a Mac.

You are mistaken (see above). For the most part, computer professionals who REALLY understand computers from the chip level are frustrated with Apple because:

1) it’s a closed system in a world where Open Systems is the mantra in the computer industry.
2) it’s difficult or impossible to get really down to the bottom of the stack and “close to the machine” (pros will understand what I mean). The same simplicity that unsophisticated users love is the limitation for many knowledgable computer users.
3) now more than ever, there is no upgradability except a forklift.
4) the cost is 1.5 x2x the cost of a comparable Windows (or Linux) machine
5) the never ending proselytizing fervor from many Mac users as is exemplified in this thread.

Fair enough. However, most of us are NOT “in the computer industry”, most is us don’t want to “get close to the machine”… most of just want it to do what we want it to do without tinkering and configuring and having to be “computer expert” like you.

I use the Mac Photos app, Affinity & Topaz. I have a Alienware laptop, 2007 iMac, 2012 Mac Mini & a 2019 Mac Book Pro. my wife & our relatives have PC's & they have never had a problem opening the hundreds of photos I have shared. Some through email, facebook, jump drive & SD cards. I've used Nikon exclusively, D5000, D200, P900, D500 & D850. The only problems I've had were self inflicted & Apple service has helped me often. Keep looking, there's something you're missing.

I understand, but I would disagree with the idea that you need to be a computer expert to run a Windows machine. If your screen name is your amateur call, I’m guessing you are more than competent with computers and electronics.

Wow…….jpeg is jpeg and nef is nef no matter what computer system or device you use. In finder you should find your original pics.
I don’t know how NX studio works but normally you open in studio a nef or jpeg and you save as (whatever you name it) and what kind of format, resolution you want it saved.
I believe that you sec pics you posted contains no information or just information for the program (studio) it self.
Apple care helps without any problem, Nikon maybe too.
I get easily frustrated and I know how it’s some little knowledge missing and nothing works how I was used to. I feel your pain

I wonder if the file renaming was happening in the Camera. Nikon allows you to mess with the file naming.

If you get this far note that the OPs initial problem has been 'solved'. Some time ago. The Mac apparently creates files (some sort of kluge with updates to their own file system) that are usually hidden but necessary for the file system to be able to read the jpgs. The OP needed (needs) to find the initial jpgs themselves AND NOT the kluge files but that is up to him to find where these are (and the best of luck to him since it is a Mac however I suspect it should not be too hard).
This thread has deteriorated into a Mac v PC debate, which I am guilty of helping, so let's move on.

“Most of us…”. Did you arrive at this conclusion by way of a poll or perhaps a statistical analysis?

But that is exactly the point.

What irritates the PC community (if there is such thing) is the aura of superiority that Mac users try to impose.

No, Mac's are not better than non Mac computers.

Neither the opposite is true, each system has it strengths.

If computers were vehicles, the a Apple device would be a Volvo. Pricey and secure easy ride.

And PCs would be the rest of the market, from motorcycles to airplanes, not so easy to use but with a solution for every need.

Each and every task that can performed on a Mac can also be performed on a PC, either running Windows or Linux.

But the opposite isn't true. A very small minority of tasks performed by PCs can be performed by Mac's

Try to use s Mac as a file server, or HPC, or as an embedded edge computer running in harsh environments 24/7. Try to configure a Mac to a trivial task as managing multiple network interfaces with filtered routing.

Mac's have they niche, true enough... but don't try to evangelize or - worse - patronize those for whom Mac's are of no use or no advantage whatsoever.

As far as price goes. You don't have neither cheap mac nor expensive mac. With PC you can have very cheap PC or very expensive PC. Much more than a mac.

Yes re: “more than competent”. I just don’t want to work too hard at it. 😉

What you can do is use Parallels Desktop 18, then you can have the best of both worlds. A pc on your Mac.

Hey, if you don't like the Mac Pro as a Mac, you can run Windows on it. It's an Intel computer.
Not if it's a new Mac with the M-1 Chip!
You can still run Windows 11 for ARM under Parallels Desktop 18. I think I linked it here, somewhere.

I ran Parallels Desktop 3 through 7. It was a great solution. I was able to cut and paste between Mac and Windows, have Mac and Windows apps open at the same time, share all the peripherals, use all our corporate network resources, etc. With the switch to Apple Silicon, they've had to re-work a lot of things and strike a deal with Microsoft. It's looking promising now... IF Win 11 for ARM can be promising.
