Why I despise Apple

What a freakin' pain in the arse using a nearly brand new Apple Mac Pro which I purchase solely to view images on when on a Nikon holiday. I love the image rendering, it is great! What I do NOT like, every JPEG image file that has been converted from a Nikon NEF file using Nikon's NX Studio software, every one of those has been reformatted after viewing on my Mac and no longer viewable on my Windows 10 desktop 'puter. The Mac adds a prefix to every viewed file and when I attempted to rename the file by eliminating the prefix, that process did not undo what the Mac had done. What this means, I have to have a duplicate set of files just for viewing on the Mac. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...................................

Why would you even use a Windows PC after the Mac?? Once you go Mac, you never go back!

In my experience, I would NEVER get nor ever use an Apple product based on this experience alone. Yeah, the display is great but at what cost, having to keep two copies of everything, one for Windows and another for Apple.

Calm down. Quite obviously to those of us who are platform agnostic, you are doing something incorrectly. It's probably so simple you're overthinking it.

Please post a sample image, saving the downloadable version of the file, so we can read the metadata and figure out the f-up. There are plenty of knowledgeable folk here who can decipher your errant ways and get you back on track.

The Mac can create files in all the same formats as PCs. With a $40 wonder called Graphic Converter 11, which can read about 200 different image formats, you can write about 80 different ones out.

Hey, if you don't like the Mac Pro as a Mac, you can run Windows on it. It's an Intel computer.

What is the prefix added? I only use Mac, but I haven't noticed any prefix added to my JPEG files. I don't use Nikon's NX though, I use Adobe Camera Raw, so maybe it's the Nikon software causing the problem.

NX Studio; it has worked for my needs and it matches up with the in camera settings and options for my Nikon DSLRs, all three of them. It handles Nikon NEF files nicely.

NX Studio is not my software of choice, and it is a little quirky and light on features, but its free, and is capable of excellent output. Calling it crap is a little excessive.

Sample file, originally an NEF from a D850. File name as exported from NX Studio is F85_4216a; same file after opening it up on my Mac Pro is now ._F85_4216a. Something changed after the file was opened using the Mac Pro because that same file will not open back on my Windows 10 PC now. My process is as follows: edit the NEF file in NX Studio, export as a JPEG; take that JPEG and open it on the Mac Pro, it opens and at the same time it adds a period and underscore as a prefix to every file I open with the Mac Pro. I have not made any changes to any settings on the Windows 10 PC nor on the Mac, especially the Mac which I have for one reason only...to view my Nikon digital files and I shoot only Nikon digital. This is not the first time I have had this situation; it has happened ever since I gave away my HP laptop because I got the Mac Pro. Have viewed this image on two Samsung 55" smart TVs with no issues; have not tried viewing any files on the Samsung that have been opened on the Mac.

The first downloadable file here is the JPEG directly from NX Studio; the second file is from the Mac after it was opened on the Mac.

By the way, that desert bighorn was about 60 feet away and headed in my direction when I got the shot with a 24-70 f/2.8 on a D850.

I go between macs an pc all the time and never had your problem. Whatever software you are using must be causing the changes in the file names. There must be an automatic setting that got turned on and you did not realize it. You could have clicked on something and did not realize it, or maybe not. When on a Mac, I always view the images through Bridge and LR. Even when I put actual files on to the Mac desk top then take them off there has never been a file change. I keep my files on an external drive. You could call Apple support and ask them what is causing your problem. That might be your best bet. Sorry that I can not be of more help.

Oh, for gods' sake. On the Mac, ._F85_4216a is not an image file, it is a Desktop resource fork file! ANY file starting with ._ is NOT an image file. . _ files are created automatically by MacOS and contain metadata related to the accompanying file that was placed there by programs in the Mac. You should ignore those. The real image filename would start with F85_4216a and have a suffix of .jpg, .nef. .tif, etc.

In Finder Preferences, go to Advanced, and TURN ON Show All Filename Extensions. That way, you can see the difference between a JPEG and NEF. Unfortunately, Apple loves to hide filename extensions. If you go both ways, you need them at all times. Turn 'em on.

When copying all your files to a Windows PC, you can safely DELETE all files starting with ._, once they are on the PC. If you see them on the Mac, you can delete them there, but the MacOS will simply recreate them as needed for its purposes.

See? It's not so bad. You just need to dig a little to understand what's happening. Macs and Windows are different. Don't expect one to be the other.

Once the ._ (period underscore) prefix has been added, that file is not readable on my Windows PC, do you not get that? There is no duplicate file. Yes, I can DELETE the files on my PC and in doing so I have to get a clean copy of that image file and replace what I had the DELETE. More work than it is worth. See???
