If they're under 18, be sure to have a release permitting you to shoot from a parent or guardian, plus the model release signed by both the parent and the model.

Hi Paul,
I shoot Models from Model Mayhem and I offer prints or all files I have post processed from the shoot. On my MODEL Release, I state quite clearly the model can use the files for any purpose to further her career. I still retain all rights to do any manipulation or use the photos as I see fit. Most models prefer the digital files, which I load into a Drop Box folder, from which they can download the photos. The folder is available for a set amount of time, then deleted. Many photographers will wince at my giving those rights to the model I am sure.

If you would like to take a look at my work, here is my MM # 1388481.

Best of luck in your endeavors.

Daniel

Wow!! more excellent advice! Your methods of working with models matches what I'd like to do. The model release I found is a PHOTGRAPHER release. Makes so much sense to be sure to be clear the model realizes that she's free to use them BUT I retain all rights,

I will be sure to check out you work on MM

thanks so much
Paul

Oh, that's not mine. Mine were all plastic and Duco cement when I was a kid. I can still recall the smell of that.

This question is for any fellow Hoggers who have worked with models in a "trade for print" scenario.

I understand the concept but how is TFP actually accomplished? Do you provide a flash drive of pics the model has chosen or do you actually hand the model a set of prints?

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you
Paul

PaulW128,

I belong to Model Mayhem and use them in the past when I had my studio. I usally make arrangements with the model sending her all her photos through the internet and promise to edit 5 for free. I tell her to pick 5 out that she likes and to send them to me.

Ahhhh Duco cement!! That smell was the best reason for building models.

Who knows, maybe the reason we loved that smell was because we were getting a nice buzz in while building them! 🤓

That makes perfect sense! I never really understood the entire process of working with models. I’d usually talk myself out of even trying but now that I have access to pros and people way more experienced than me, it’s great!!

Thank you

Great suggestion, didn't even think to ask if she might have a home studio. And again, these are tweens, so I need to be super cautious.

Actually, I meant in the studio she considers her home base, not necessarily her actually home

Sounds like you have gotten a lot of good advise. Have fun

Paul!

A model release is basically a contract outlining that in exchange for photographing a model, her likeness and her "costumes", you will provide specific things: money, edited images or whatever is agreed upon! Everything must be listed so each party understands their commitments.

In addition, if the model has not reached their majority and has not obtained permission from their parents or guardians, the release is not legal. They must sign the release as well.

A model release will state the basic terms as to usage, where the images can be used and anything else: e.g.
"The photographer may not use a model's real name but an alias; the right to edit the images and even distort them; can use for commercial purposes or not; exhibition, print or portfolio use only or not." By spelling out all possible contingencies, a photographer will be protected as well.

Be sure to add to hold up your end of the release: "The model will receive "X number" of edited images on a flash drive or will receive "X number of edited images or etc. via email" You get the idea.

Since the late 60s, I've photographed close to 1K models and sold images to magazines back in the day and used the attached Model Release and have never had a problem!

Be well! Ed

Ed, thank you, that was very helpful. Thanks to everyone’s help I’m way better prepared to meet the dancer and her parents

I use MM to find models, and I get my photos correct in the camera, so I give them copies of all the original JPG.

getting a model release is very CORRECT and do follow those instructions they gave up above.

there is so much to do with dancers, I am constantly looking for dancers to shoot.

have you heard of Meetup dot com ? its a web site that you join by telling them where you are in the world, and any and all interests you have. like 'Photography' they will email you back with info about groups that actually meet about photography in your area, usually free to join the group. you only pay for what you do with the groups.
many of organizers of such group, hire a model, then announce to the group about that model coming in such and such a time at such a location and then a fee to the photographers, its a great way to practice. and usually very cost effective ( not free TF LOL )
you can e-mail me directly if you want to find out more. I am not making anything out of it, I just like to spread good ideas.....

also, please do contact me if you want to get idea of what to do with the dancers....use long exposures and LED lights ( painting with light ) and more ideas, I want to join in on the fun.
