Calm down. Quite obviously to those of us who are platform agnostic, you are doing something incorrectly. It's probably so simple you're overthinking it.

Hey, if you don't like the Mac Pro as a Mac, you can run Windows on it. It's an Intel computer.

You're probably correct about the file format problem but the new MacBooks are no longer intel machines; they're using Apple's M1 chip and this can create problems with some programs written to take advantage of native intel instructions. I don't think this has anything to do with the JPG file issue the OM is describing however; in fact I can open JPG images created on an M1 MacBook with an older intel MacBook.

Spot on.

I made an assumption there that he has a Mac Pro (tower computer) which is still Intel-based. If he has a new Mac*Book* Pro, it is Apple Silicon-based. These new Macs can run Windows for ARM, but only with Parallels Desktop emulation at this writing.

NX Studio is not my software of choice, and it is a little quirky and light on features, but its free, and is capable of excellent output. Calling it crap is a little excessive.

It is not crap. I use it to cull my NEF images as it renders the imbedded Jpeg much faster than my RAW processor. If most of your images are captured correctly in camera, it is the only program you need to use. And if you shoot Jpeg, and set Pictures controls correctly in camera, you may not need to do anything else except resize the Jpeg in NX Studio. For RAW files with tricky color info I open in Studio and make a Tiff and then process the Tiff in my RAW processor.

And it includes Nikon Transfer if you need that to ingest your images from your card or camera. And it is free.

In my experience, I would NEVER get nor ever use an Apple product based on this experience alone. Yeah, the display is great but at what cost, having to keep two copies of everything, one for Windows and another for Apple.

I agree! Seems like most of the computer problems mentioned on this site are MAC related. Every time apple does an upgrade nothing works.

My son worked as a senior tekkie for Apple for several years... and most of their senior tech guys had PCs at home, too. You could do stuff with a PC that you couldn't do with an Apple.

Never have a Mac. Take that back I have the original 128K Mac. But it seems Mac's more difficult to use than PC.

Their displays originally sold them. They were so much better than PCs in the early days. I came from the era of CGA and Hercules graphics cards...

Actually I do agree witth Steve Jobs for making graphics and resolution more important than colors.

Many of us who have used Macs since 1984 would dispute that, but then we understand the system.

My last two upgrades worked fine, even though the first one included switching from Intel iMac to Apple Silicon on my M1 Air.

I gave up on Apple products when I friend of mine asked me to help him start up his new Apple Tablet. Turns out you couldn't even turn the damn thing on without having a credit card number on file and neither of us wanted to do that! This was awhile back now and maybe things have changed, but I thought that was way over the top and it soured me on ever dealing with Apple on anything.

Virtually everything in starting up an iPad, Mac, iPhone or whatever has a choice to select "Later" . You can then skip that step.

What a freakin' pain in the arse using a nearly brand new Apple Mac Pro which I purchase solely to view images on when on a Nikon holiday. I love the image rendering, it is great! What I do NOT like, every JPEG image file that has been converted from a Nikon NEF file using Nikon's NX Studio software, every one of those has been reformatted after viewing on my Mac and no longer viewable on my Windows 10 desktop 'puter. The Mac adds a prefix to every viewed file and when I attempted to rename the file by eliminating the prefix, that process did not undo what the Mac had done. What this means, I have to have a duplicate set of files just for viewing on the Mac. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...................................

Solution - get rid of the Windows puter.

You've already been given the solution.

I’m a Mac guy. In the summer I have to use windows for some things I do. After sixteen years of this PCs still drive me crazy. So “not intuitive” after all these years. It’s mostly what you are used to.
