The first downloadable file here is the JPEG directly from NX Studio; the second file is from the Mac after it was opened on the Mac.

The second won't open on my Win 11 Pro with i9, 64 GB high speed RAM and Nvidia 2060 video card and hard-wired to my modem running Spectrum Silver. So it did download everything as I sat and looked at it for over a minute.
All I get is a black screen with a small white square at the center.

Murphy's Law strikes again.

Once the ._ (period underscore) prefix has been added, that file is not readable on my Windows PC, do you not get that? There is no duplicate file. Yes, I can DELETE the files on my PC and in doing so I have to get a clean copy of that image file and replace what I had the DELETE. More work than it is worth. See???

Yes, I get that! There is no reason to read that ._ file. It is a hidden file on the Mac. You must have "Show Hidden Files" turned on in Windows.

If you are thinking any file with ._ is a readable file on the PC, fugettaboudit. It's an under-the-hood item MacOS uses to track file properties. Windows does not know what to do with it. PCs cannot use it. Your real image files always should look more like an 8.3 formatted DOS file (8 alphanumeric characters, a period, and a three character filename extension).

Sample file, originally an NEF from a D850. File name as exported from NX Studio is F85_4216a; same file after opening it up on my Mac Pro is now ._F85_4216a. Something changed after the file was opened using the Mac Pro because that same file will not open back on my Windows 10 PC now. My process is as follows: edit the NEF file in NX Studio, export as a JPEG; take that JPEG and open it on the Mac Pro, it opens and at the same time it adds a period and underscore as a prefix to every file I open with the Mac Pro. I have not made any changes to any settings on the Windows 10 PC nor on the Mac, especially the Mac which I have for one reason only...to view my Nikon digital files and I shoot only Nikon digital. This is not the first time I have had this situation; it has happened ever since I gave away my HP laptop because I got the Mac Pro. Have viewed this image on two Samsung 55" smart TVs with no issues; have not tried viewing any files on the Samsung that have been opened on the Mac.

The second file is just a small white square.

In *nix systems, files starting with a dot are hidden files. These are "technical"

I believe that your real images got saved at another folder and you are trying to open the dot files on the Windows Box

Just open a terminal window and type "find / -name some_filename" and hit enter.

That command will say exactly where the file is stored

What a freakin' pain in the arse using a nearly brand new Apple Mac Pro which I purchase solely to view images on when on a Nikon holiday. I love the image rendering, it is great! What I do NOT like, every JPEG image file that has been converted from a Nikon NEF file using Nikon's NX Studio software, every one of those has been reformatted after viewing on my Mac and no longer viewable on my Windows 10 desktop 'puter. The Mac adds a prefix to every viewed file and when I attempted to rename the file by eliminating the prefix, that process did not undo what the Mac had done. What this means, I have to have a duplicate set of files just for viewing on the Mac. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...................................

" brand new Apple Mac Pro which I purchase solely to view images on when on a Nikon holiday" Assuming this is a correct statement, which I doubt, if you are a Windows user why didn't you purchase one of the small Windows laptops.

Calm down, take a deep breath, and take a sip. When Apple moved from its older OS (pre version 9) to its Unix-based foundation, the need was found that in order for the Mac to take certain actions regarding files, it was necessary to create what are known as "AppleDouble" files. These files are "hidden" in that their names begin with a dot (hidden files on nearly every OS follow this convention) and an underscore character. THEY ARE NOT DUPLICATES OR REPLACEMENTS for the originals. They merely contain what are known as "resource forks" known to the OS. This is simply metadata.

Apple even includes a utility program, a command line operation known as dot_clean. Non-HFS file systems, these files are meaningless. And they are NOT intended for viewing/editing by the user.

From reading the thread, it would appear that a particular "filter" has been applied to file viewing, and that AppleDouble files are being displayed and the originals are not. I should note that if one moves or deletes an original, the AppleDouble file may not be deleted along with it. Once again, the dot_clean program to the rescue!

`dot_clean -m` essentially does the same thing as `find . -name ._\* -delete`, which just traverses the current directory (folder) and deletes every file whose name starts with `._`.

I am troubled that you believe that it is "Apple's fault," when it appears to simply be a user error. Over the course of my career, I have used mainframe, Windows and Apple devices. They are all different! They all have their quirks! My current/preferred platform is Apple. My suggestion is to learn to drive that new car and you will be very happy with its performance.

When you export a nef file from NXStudio it will ask to change file name where it adds the _ to the file name.

Calm down. Quite obviously to those of us who are platform agnostic, you are doing something incorrectly. It's probably so simple you're overthinking it.

Please post a sample image, saving the downloadable version of the file, so we can read the metadata and figure out the f-up. There are plenty of knowledgeable folk here who can decipher your errant ways and get you back on track.

The Mac can create files in all the same formats as PCs. With a $40 wonder called Graphic Converter 11, which can read about 200 different image formats, you can write about 80 different ones out.

Hey, if you don't like the Mac Pro as a Mac, you can run Windows on it. It's an Intel computer.

I usually find in similar situations that I run into, it’s operator error. I suggest you contact Apple support directly, by phone, and they will help you solve your problem.Yes, Apple is one of the few tech companies that provide knowledgeable, in-person technical support.

If you put your pics on an external drive that has been formatted for both you won’t have that problem, and can view them on both Mac an windows.

Short sighted! There are issues with every type of computer and every software. Some issue affect some users, ....
After retiring I went to Apple and would never go back.

One of the humorous (?) lines I use often is, "The beauty of standards is that there's so many to choose from!"

If you can identify the following, you are probably in the ten percent who do:

exFAT
NTFS
APFS
FAT-12
ext4
HPFS

Most of us stop at the concept of "file." Each photo you take and save to disk is a "file." But what is a file? And how does your computer know where it begins and ends? Ah, that's the purpose of the "file system." As you can see from the abbreviated list above, there are different file systems based on different OS types, and needs. A lot of effort has been made to shield users from having to know the sordid details about file systems (I recall the old "cylinder," "sector," "block factor" and "segment" terms from the old days!).

A brief introduction to file systems can be read here: https://iq.opengenus.org/types-of-file-system/. Specifics on Mac file systems can be read here: https://support.apple.com/guide/disk-utility/file-system-formats-dsku19ed921c/mac

You know, if you've had it with your Mac, I'll be happy to take it off your hands for pennies on the dollar!

I gave up on Apple products when I friend of mine asked me to help him start up his new Apple Tablet. Turns out you couldn't even turn the damn thing on without having a credit card number on file and neither of us wanted to do that! This was awhile back now and maybe things have changed, but I thought that was way over the top and it soured me on ever dealing with Apple on anything.

I'll resurrect my D850 (which has been mothballed) and I have downloaded NX Studio and I'll test it on my Mac later today.
