I used Corel for a few years and loved it. Then I got LR 5 and as an organizer it was great. I gradually started using PS because it tied in so well and easy with LR. I continued using Corel PSP for a couple of years for a few things it did better than the Adobe apps, but I gradually stopped buying the upgrades and using PSP after I retired from teaching and wasn't using Corel Draw's graphic arts features for producing posters, maps or overhead projection slide shows etc. for the classroom.

Every so often I am tempted to try it again. I also used elements for a few years on a laptop when I wasn't near my desktop because it was smaller and didn't choke my laptop running some advanced edits, but that too I also gradually stopped using.

PhotoScapeX (Free) can be used accurately with 3 or 4 clicks or you can REALLY get into serious editing. Here are a couple of sites for you to see if you are interested. Be sure to select Mac/or Windows. Get the free version (just below the "Pro" download) first (it never expires), and you can always upgrade. Also, please do yourself a favor and watch the following two short YouTube videos to see if you would be interested in training. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWC-SAuYOzw&t=325s Instruction and download at http://x.photoscape.org/

On the opening page of PhotoScape X, there is an icon at the top, just to the left of the word "Viewer". This will open a page of EVERY function that PhortoScape has. When you click on a specific process it will describe how to perform that function and open up a < 2-minute video, showing step-by-step how to perform that function.
PhotoScape X has a built-in Viewer, Editor, Cut-Out, Batch* (processing), Collage, Combine, Create GIF, Print, and (Many) Tools, such as *Batch - Collage, Crop, Resize, Color, Filter, Film, Light, Insert, Curves, Frames, etc.

PhotoScape X is easy to learn, has lots of features that cover virtually all editing needs, and is free (the "trial" can be used forever). You can make your editing as simple or as complex as you want.

AFFINITY 2 has some quick touches and lets you grow into it or not. Fair bit of stuff on the internet coming through for the new version now. Get the free trial. And look at the guides (if advancing) by Robin Whalley on You Tube.

Affinity 2 is a great program at a great price but the OP indicated "She does casual editing, so she’s not needing a heavy-duty program. What she needs is a good program that is not too complicated" . As great as Affinity 2 is, I don't believe it meets the stated requirements. It is a heavy-duty program which is fairly complicated to learn, and is overkill for casual editing. Casual editing to me mostly means adjusting the exposure, cropping, straightening, and perhaps adding some special effects. like the now defunct Picasa. Much more than that is not "casual". A simple program like the FastStone Image Viewer can do basic casual editing like that and much more. It is far easier to use with a much less busy and complicated interface than Affinity. It can be used to edit raw, Jpeg and Tiff files, and its free, although they encourage purchasing it as a very nominal price. It costs nothing to try it out or use it. Here is the link:

You are absolutely right, Affinity Photo is probably more than she needs or will use. It is a great editing program though and I do find it versatile and capable of quite advanced photo editing.

My niece in Arizona got a new computer (a PC), and her old editing program won’t run on it. I have a Mac, so I am not much help. She does casual editing, so she’s not needing a heavy-duty program. What she needs is a good program that is not too complicated and not too expensive. Family shots, get-togethers, and vacation photos are what she mostly shoots. She has a Canon SL2 and a decent zoom lens that she uses. Any suggestions that I can give her?

Before it is suggested by someone, she does not want a LR subscription.

Corel Paintshop Pro Ultimate is a winner. It has plenty of easy to use features as well as more advanced ones with which you can experiment and grow. Anyone with average intelligence can master it.

I get lightroom and photoshop for only $10.00 a month, and they give free updates all the time.
The only thing cheaper is free.

Free FastStone to view photos and light editing. If I get excited it's high dollar Lightroom Classic.

Are you sure you are talking about the same product? Because Fastone Viewer has sharpening tool.

Smart Photo Editor in my opinion gives you the most bang for your bucks, they have a free trial and the program is around $30.00

Affinity Photo 2 is on sale for 40 bucks until Dec 14th. A great program very comparable to Photoshop as far as capabilities. I have the first version and see no need to upgrade to the second one. Updates are free until the next generation comes out. Was 4 years before 2 came out
