If you shoot with a Nikon, use the free program from Nikon, Nikon NX Studio. It is at NikonUSA.

Might I suggest Photoshop Elements. Very efficient editing software and you buy it outright... no renting or monthly payments. I used the full blown Photoshop for years, but find that Elements does all I need and then some. Worth trying.
God Bless,

Photoshop Elements lets you use the skills you developed in Photoshop and is an affordable non-subscription editor. Try it.

FastStone calls itself a viewer. Can it do real 'editing' or just minor touch-ups. As a long time user I'd like to hear from you.

Thanks.

I've been using Affinity Photo for years, even though I also have LR/PS. They've now issued Affinity Photo 2 which has some major upgrades. It's a one-time buy, and the price varies from $40-$50, depending on whether it's still on sale. It combines many of the features of LR/PS into one editing program, and offers features that neither of them have. The newest version has non-destructive RAW editing and that's what I use the most. Affinity Photo, Version 2 by Serif. This version came out a couple of weeks ago and it is easy to install, has tons of capability, has a learning curve but tons of up to date videos on how to use it. I have been using version 1 with its 20 or so free upgrades for 5 years. I paid $50 for that version. So in almost 6 years I have paid $90. total for a program that is very similar to Photoshop and has no subscription cost.

AP's new version 2 release corrected a glaring problem with version 1 in that any work in the raw conversion module was not saved when the conversion to RGB was done. It's good that they fixed that in V2. However AP in a raw workflow is not a 100% non-destructive editor. The raster component in AP can add destructive elements to a raw workflow -- for example any cloning/healing work done in AP's raster editor is a destructive element in a raw workflow.

I agree AP is an excellent raster editor at a terrific price.

Affinity Photo is a very good raster editor at a fantastic price -- not doubt a lot of bang for the buck. "ANYTHING possible" is a huge exaggeration -- nonsense.

AP has numerous weaknesses depending on what you want to do with your image editing. It's raw conversion capability is quite limited and for many people inadequate -- some people do want to process raw files. We all set different priorities for how we want to edit/process our images. I for one place a raw workflow that is 100% non-destructive and non-linearly re-editable very high on my priority list. AP fails to be 100% non-destructive in a raw workflow.

In the new version 2 just released they thankfully addressed the most glaring fault in their raw conversion component -- the fact that it discarded all work done in the raw module once the conversion was completed -- but they made almost no other improvements in the raw processing module so some pretty big concerns still remain. For example something as basic as an HSL tool is still not provided in the raw conversion module.

In reality, though, since most all the edits one would need are non-destructible, you can do most of your work in the Photo Persona. Affinity has 5 "Personas", Develop(Raw), Photo, Tone Map, Liquify, and Export. Generally, I use Develop and Photo and occassionally Tone Map and Liquify. More than enough, I would think, for most photograpers

I'm a fan of Luminar NEO, and it has become my GO TO program for editing. It's now $99 for a lifetime license. Skylum has another method of revenue, and it is what they call Extensions...which are functions added to the base license, and are a source of discontent among the Luminar faithful...you pay for the extensions, whichever ones you want, and if you got ALL the extensions, they would cost more than the base program.

"Most" isn't 100%. There are raw processors available that do provide a 100% non-destructive raw workflow. AP is a raster editor that provides a partially non-destructive raw workflow. It matters more or less to different people. If it's possible I want my raw workflow to be 100% non-destructive and AP won't provide that -- partial isn't the same as 100%.

For a lot of folks it's not an issue and they're happy with AP which is fine. Serif devotes considerable advertising copy to claiming AP is non-destructive including with the new version 2. That raises an eyebrow for me.

I have used Corel Paint Shop Pro for decades, even before Corel bought it. Costs far less than LR and does most of what that does.
