Keep in mind the average UHH is of retirement age, in all sorts of financial situations, some where buying two top line cameras is no matter at all. A casual scan of member equipment profiles shows this situation many times repeated.
Yep, my wife and I are well off, not rich, but well off.
1. My full state pension as a teacher. With full health coverage from Los Angeles Unified School District.
2. Minor SS from years in other jobs.
3. Minor pension from 13 years working weekends and summers in a supermarket.
4. 40% disability pension from VA for Agent Orange Exposure. (2 years, 2 months, 2 days overseas time out of a 3-year Regular Army
Enlistment, all in Vietnam)
5. My wife is at the max for SS from her years as an OR Tech, RN and OR Charge nurse.
6. She also has a fairly big 401k that we haven't touched yet - she is waiting until age 70 when the monthly payments will max out.
7. We have a special needs son who gets Medicare (30yo but mentally a bright 5yo) and a special state program with 283 hours paid
time a month for a caregiver. Since we are both retired, we do the care ourselves and get paid for it.
So, I can afford fairly nice cameras, lenses and other gear. Sigma SD10 + SD14 (traded), Canon 6D (traded), Canon 5Div, 7Dii (two, traded one, missed it, got another), 80D, 90D, R7 and my latest a Sony RX10iv for a carry around just in case. And of course a big selection of lenses over the years, sold some, traded up models with some etc. etc. and last but not least a photo printer that goes to 13x19 but on "custom" will do 13x39 when fed roll paper.
So, yes, some of us can afford toys etc. The wife finally is starting to admit that (she tends to act like we were in poverty) and after asking why I wanted such a big car (midsize SUV) is starting to talk about trading her Honda Civic for an SUV (she takes mine when she goes shopping) only "one with more room in the back seats" for when she helps haul Special Olympics athletes around = a full size SUV.
