I'm looking for an excellent macro lens for my D5. It can be a zoom or a prime. I'm open to suggestions either within or outside the Nikon family of lenses. Thank you.
Look at the Tamron 90mm. My brother has one and it is really nice. I use a Tokina 100mm and it is also really sharp.
Some Tamron lenses need to be adjusted by the user. Was that necessary for your macro lens?
If the want to stay with Nikon, the Micro Nikkor 105mm f2.8 is great. First I tried the Nikon 60mm macro, but the focusing distance at maximum magnification was so short that the subject would be inside the lens hood.

Thank you. Will check it out.
Jeff. For most macro uses autofocus doesnt make sense. I second the notion that you will want a focal length of at least 90mm for convenient working distances. For really great optical quality consider a used Zeiss 100mm makro zf1 or 2. It is simply amazing and can handle higher resolution bodies with aplomb.
If I had the money, I would get the Sigma 150mm f2.8 OS on full frame ....I have 100 and 180mm macros and I really like the 100 on CROP FRAME - which means 150mm on FF. If you want the lens to do double duty with portraits ect. then AF and OS is important.
My favorite is the Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G Micro. I've owned it for about six years, and it's among my favorites. I just recently bought the 105mm F/2.8 S version for my Z cameras. It's as good as people say.
The other macro lens in my kit is the Nikkor 70-180 f/f4.5-5.6 D. It's an older model that didn't sell all that well, but is a superb performer. I've also tried it out on my Z's with the FTZ adapter. Works perfectly, but no A/F, since the lens is a screw drive. Not cheap on the used market, but it's a gem.

My favorite Nikon macro lens of all time was the Nikon 60mm AF D 2.8 lens.

My D5 loves the 105mm 2.8!
Any of the Nikon macro lenses or the IRIX 150mm manual focus macro lens. I prefer macro lenses with longer focal lengths as most of what I do requires more distance from the subject.

I use Nikon's 105 for distance and the 60mm for close in

Not hard to find one for Nikon. I learned that while I was hunting for one in EOS mount (NOT easy).
I wound up with the f/3.5 version, and assuming the f/2.8 is even bigger I feel lucky to have the f/3.5 ! (Both versions have OIS.)

I found the 60mm had too close focusing distance. At the closest focus, the subject was too close to use the lens hood. I replaced it with the 105.

I purchased an excellent quality secondhand Sigma 180mm f2.8 OS macro lens form MPB for my D500. A bit heavy; but it is a fantastic lens and even takes the Sigma TC14. 1:1 at 49cm.
