What size and format?

My neighbor wants me to photograph his '57 Chevy. I was planning to take the pictures, download to my computer, then put the good ones on a mini flash drive to give to him, then he can do anything he wants with them. Since he is probably going to blow his favorite up in size and frame it, what format should the pics be in that I give him? I have my camera set on RAW+JPEG. What do professional print shops want as far as format, size, etc? I don't want to give him a good picture, only to have it look like yuck after it is resized. Thanks for any insights you can offer.

Save the processed photo in the highest quality JPG. That is what most printers print from.

Exactly - but start with the highest quality RAW if you do any P/P work.

FYI, a 6MP sensor can produce a jpg that can be blown up to 5' by 4' square with no apparent loss of resolution, so you should be good unless he's making a billboard.

Yeah, I didn't realize until I posted it that it was stupid, but didn't feel like fixing it.

Do yourself a favor, find out the one he wants, adjust it, crop it apply any filters you want. Then show it to him and if he likes it select a quality print shop (ie Bay Photo, Adorama, etc) yourself and get it printed for him. I post my engagements to a gallery in SMugMug and the give the URL to the party guests on tent cards at the place setting. The very first JPG they see is print explaining the benefits in cost and quality to select the images in the gallery and print them through my web site (it used Bay and another lab. They do only printing so know their job and if something isn't right you can ask them to correct it........or not. Bu I trust them most of the time and get good quality. Leave Walmart, Walgreens and CVS for granny.

+1 on the neighborhood printing shops.

I used OokiiImage out in California to print a 20x30 poster of one of my images, and it only cost $20 and about three days. Very good paper, nice cardboard mailing tube that I use to scare the cats with, and overall great service.

I save anything I want to print in tif format with no compression. this gets the most amount of information to the printer.

Anything you save in jpg loses information from the original capture no matter if it's RAW, jpg or whatever.

Other than that I agree with the comment above about YOU doing all the post processing and showing him the product. Once he concurs, YOU get it printed by a pro and give it to him (in exchange for a tidy sum of $$). No matter who does the PP and printing it's still your picture and your name will forever be associated with it, might as well make it really nice.

ONCE I gave portraits to the (expert) client to work up and he screwed them every way from Sunday ... but my name was on them, never again.

Photo pricing comment.

I have done some research and read some offered doc. The market going price for a single 8x10 is around $56 average. The price goes up and down depending on the size of your head and mortage. Which seem to be exponetially and proportionally connected. LOL

Here's a tip. Costco will print an 8"x10" glossy for $1.50

Costco will print an 8"x12" glossy for $1.50

Costco will print a 20"x30" Canvas print for $70

8"x10" is a standard size for frames.
8"x12" are not, only custom frame shops can handle that.
20"x30" Canvas prints require no frame, no glass.

I have all my best shots from a 8"x12" full frame shot
made to 20"x30 Canvas prints at Costco & save money.

Do you sell these to clients? Have you tried one of the print shops and marked the difference. I am curious to the comparison.
