In the past I've sold some stuff locally via Craig's List, where the guy shows up with cash (or doesn't show up, you know how that goes). But now I want to sell some old cameras stuff, and some other items, that may require a larger audience to find a buyer.

What sort of payment method do you guys use to sell stuff to individuals, that has to be shipped? I know there's Paypal, but is there anything else that's safe and easy?

A resort owner last year wanted me to use Venmo for the deposit. I thought, no big deal, so I got the app and waited a day before planning to use it. Within 24 hours someone was trying to scam me via text regarding an alleged overcharge or some such nonsense. I deleted the app and worked with the resort owner to send the money another way, Paypal I think.
Be careful whichever you use, even Zelle which I use often, is easy enough to scam by a buyer.

In my experience, which includes two scams for a total loss of $2000 in 2011/12, as long as one logs into his/her account with valid credentials and actually sees the payment, a scam cannot occur. I learned the hard way, but I did learn.

The Zelle scam is the electronic version of the old “oh, I’m sorry, I misunderstood and wrote the check for $x over the amount you wanted. Please send the overage back to me.” Substitute the modern terms, and not only are you out the “overage” but also the original amount you thought was safe. I found this post on Elliot Advocacy a while ago. https://www.elliott.org/problem-solved/how-to-get-your-money-back-from-a-zelle-scam-or-accidental-money-transfer/

PayPal has always worked for me. eBay and PayPal.

eBay hasn't used PayPal for several years. The have their own payment process with a 3% fee just like PayPal. It actually works very well.

One would think that sending cash before receiving the goods could be just as risky.

True dat. I almost got scammed when I attempted to purchase a lens. I found it on FB and the seller immediately after getting my payment ghosted me. Fortunately I had sent the payment through the USPS and had the seller's home address. Conferring with the local police resulted in the local LEOs on the seller's end geting involved and the shorten the stpory, I got my money back. The seller got my comments on FB about his nefarious deed.
