There’s a post here under for sale for a t3i with two lenses for couple of hundred bucks. Good alternative to 60D at good price. Add a “nifty 50” for a hundred and you have all a beginner would need - and you can use grandma’s lenses.

Neither are good at video and the recipient wants to do a lot of video.

I had a 60D for many years coupled with two Canon L lenses. The 24-105L was the one i used most. I have had several other cameras but the pictures from the Canon + L lens are better IMHO. i understand that the lens is the most important thing. You'll never get agreement about one camera so i suggest you go with the one she is happy with.

Just remember to check the shutter count if you can. Lower is better. Used 80D are typically very affordable. eBay is ok, just check ratings and condition closely. Invest in a couple of good quality lenses. Canon lenses tend to hold their value better than 3rd party as a general rule. Have her watch the numerous 80D videos on YouTube and they will walk you right through all the features. Good luck and we are here if you or her have questions!

One other thing, check for an 80D at your local camera shop. Happy shooting.

Thank you Steve.

If she agrees, we are likely heading to the 80D as the video is much better than the older models, and she does a lot with that. She asked for the 60D as that was what she used for the last year in school, but I suspect the 80D will be very similar to it. I think the two lens we have will get her going, and we/she can add to that if she continues to enjoy and use it.

No Joy on our one local camera shop. I have checked out the usual big used online shops we all use and their are 80D bodies available in the higher level conditions for mid $500 to low $600 at this time. Nothing I see currently active on UHH, but put a “WTB” out once she confirms her decision. All of the equipment I have has been bought new/refurb, and all but my D7200 has been from UHH. I will ask about the shutter count, and take that into account in pricing.

Thanks (Steve and all).

Hi

Looking for help from fellow hogs whom have experience with the Cannon product line, and in particular older used models. This is for my daughter. I am a Nikon shooter and am not well versed in “Cannon”

After taking a year long photography/videography course at school, she would like to continue to work on her craft(s). Both “modes” are important for her. In both, she is more focused on people/actors and some indoor and some outdoor. No sports, no landscapes, no birding. Maybe a bit of macro (eg-jewelry for sale on poshmark) and streetscapes, but that’s about it. 100% shared via social media, etc. Never prints, so I am not sure ultra high MP is needed.

She used in the class, and is comfortable with, the EOS 60D from Cannon. She has also tried a Cannon 40D and my Nikon D7200. Neither she liked as much.

So, thinking about the 60D for a Christmas present and would like opinions from those who know the Cannon line and older used models. Was hopeful that, if you all confirm the 60D is reasonable (OK, not a horrible..) choice, I can find one on the used market as people upgrade to mirrorless and look to unload their old equipment.

Two final notes.
A) She is 17, which means her focus (pun intended) can shift month to month. Therefore, I don’t want to go towards a brand new Camera or mirrorless (sorry Paul) as who knows what she will be into two years from now. If she continues and finds herself limited by equipment at that point, we can upgrade then.
B) One reason she is looking at the Cannon line is we have two inherited cannon lens from Grandma: a 28-135 and a 70-300. Is still need to understand compatibility, but if they are, this means just a 60D body would be needed.

All thoughts welcome. If there is another model other than the 60D you would recommend, please explain what features you think would make it better for her use.

Thank you in advance

Do some checking before you buy. I have an old 50D that needs work. My favorite repair shop said it sounds like a shutter problem and "if" parts were available it may cost as much as $250 - 300. They said Canon no longer makes parts for the 50D because of it's age. I didn't ask at what level they quit supporting but I imagine the 60D is not far away. You can get used ones for $100-200 but who knows what you are getting. I may only last a few weeks.

For the top line EOS 1-series cameras, there might be 10-years support after the official date of discontinued sale. The further the body is from that 1-series peak position, the less time the support will be available. The EOS 50D ended in mid 2010. The EOS 60D in mid 2013. Neither is likely to be eligible for any repair support from Canon for any issue at any price.

At least $500 too expensive, even for a lens & body combo.

How long? Until it breaks (again). You should have a 1-year warranty, or at least 6-months, on the specifics of the repair. Check your paperwork.

Expensive, digital cameras are not intended to 'disposable'. But, that said, they do mostly last only until they fail, assuming that 'failure' is sometime outside the warranty period and / or the availability of cost-effective repair options.
