Did this accident happen over a "controlled field?" If so, the tower must have been asleep. Basic tower rule, eyes always on the traffic.

Bill, there is a control tower there and also eyes on the ground being our guys coordinating this. This happened so fast NOBODY could have stopped it. The Cobra was too fast and I believe, me being a pilot, he should have known the B-17 would be turning left for final approach to the runway for either landing or a fly-by.
I have pictures of these planes from previous event and I will post in a memorial and tribute to my brothers.
Bruce.

Neither pilot saw each other …as the B-17 Turned into his left landing pattern and the Cobra blinded by his wing and coming up fast .. couldn’t see the slower moving B-17 who appeared to the Cobra pilot 20 seconds earlier as heading straight.., expecting to pass him given the B-17 path when in fact a few seconds later the B-17 started his left turn which intersected with the Cobras flight path ..

We pray the the men onboard and their families … simply a tragedy for all of us …

Incredibly sad. My sincere condolences to the families of their lost loved ones and prayers for the lost airmen. Additionally what a loss of two historic aircraft.

Was the B-17 involved in the accident named "Texas Raiders"?

As of today there are many youtube videos of this tragedy. The following one IMHO as a former military and civilian commercial pilot for the past 50 years is the most logical explanation.

I have the utmost respect for the B-17 crews during WW2. I had an uncle I never knew, Lt. William McKenna, who was a bombardier. I'm not sure how many missions he flew, but he was shot down over the Bay of Biscay in 1944. I can't imagine the hell these crews endured. These events in Texas this past weekend is a sad reminder of how quickly things can go horribly wrong. My heart and prayers to the victims and their families.

Very sad. I flew in Nine-O-Nine a few years ago and it was also lost with loss of life. I wonder if it would be better to keep those old warbirds in museums rather than risking them. So sad, prayers for the families.
