Thanks for all the replies, some gave me a laugh.

As mentioned, I should have given the size, it stands 4" tall with the lid off.

I went on the link showing Vintage Condensed Milk Containers. After looking at several of them, that seems to be what it was used for. Mystery solved that's been bugging my wife for years.

To push the can of condensed milk up so one can grab it to remove the can.
Probably not too much room on the sides.
