I don't think Nikon is terrible.

It is not as good as Canon Imho

I am quite sure the D6 is made in Japan too.

Sorry, I thought D5 was the last model they made, but you are correct. The D6 is the last.

The carrier delivered the new D850 package this morning. The shipping box was visibly crushed. The camera box itself had a crease on the top and there was no package padding on the box bottom. Not wanting to risk camera damage, it was decided to request a return. The dealer was contacted and a return authorization was received. Apparently when you return a package with FedEx there is no receipt that you gave it to the carrier (with pickup ay your door). You put the supplied return label on the box and hand it to the FedEx person. This is not something that I am comfortable doing. I do realize stuff happens in shipping. I am thankful the dealer is reputable and willing to do an exchange All total, what should have been a celebration today is now a wait a week for a replacement and return processing. Thank you for your time in reading this.

Sorry to hear about your poor experience with Nikons. My experience has been quite different as I have been buying and using Nikon products for 50 years, have never been disappointed and never had the need to return any for repair. Still satisfied with my D5.

My concern is not with the dealer. It is with the shipping carrier. The dealer is very reputable and agreed to issue a return authorization for an exchange. I am happy with that.

When I was a kid in school, we would argue which brand of truck was best, which brand of tractor was best and even which brand of seed corn was best. In this day and age, it’s more what’s “best” for you.

I have an older Canon DSLR as well as several older Nikon’s. Nikon’s are “best for me” because they fit my large hands better. My daughter likes her Canon because it fits her slender hands better. So which brand is better? It would depend upon whether you are asking me or her.

FedEx has damaged packages that it delivered to me, has delivered my packages to wrong addresses, has left my packages on my walkway in the rain rather than walk the additional eight feet to place them under cover at my door and has dropped an expensive computer at my door; we heard the crash and my dogs started barking. When I was in business, I instructed my suppliers not to ship items to me via FedEx.

FedEx is the reason I stopped buying from B&H. Amazon is my go to store. If there is a problem I download a QR code and take it with the item to the local UPS store. They scan it and hand you a receipt that indicates the item, and the time and date they received it. No boxing things up.

Amazon is a Nikon Professional Dealer.

The dealer was contacted and a return authorization was received. What also has me concerned is the return. You put the supplied return label on the box and hand it to the FedEx person. I am told that no receipt will be given to me as proof of giving the package to the shipper. All total, what should have been a celebration is now a bad decision. It is hoped the dealer issues a prompt replacement and that transaction goes smoothly. This camera is very expensive and having dealt with this dealer for several years, this transaction tastes like lemons. Thank you for your time in reading this.

Usually a return shipping label is sent to you via e-mail. You download it, print it, and put the label on the box. Unless you deleted everything you should still have the e-mail, the file, or both. Open up that file for the label and the tracking number will be on it. Go to the FedEx website, track it, and save all the info, including the e-mail, if you are worried about any claim by the seller that you did not return it. Always keep any e-mails and files regarding a purchase until you are absolutely sure you will not need them. Then keep it all a bit longer. I keep a file on my computer and back-up that I dump that kind of stuff into. Occasional purges keep it organized. Well, sort of anyway.

We can agree to disagree. This is why they make chocolate, vanilla, and sometimes strawberry. My previous post remains as stated. I hope we're not starting yet another Nikon vs. Canon war. My 50 years of experience has been different than yours.

About a year ago I was chatting with one of my patients who was a FEDEX driver. I was surprised when he told me that FEDEX drivers (and I assume this is true but have not "independently verified it") are contract employees - they get no benefits, have to pay the whole self-employed tax, etc.. He told me that most were unhappy and always had applications in at UPS. Maybe that explains a few things!

I have had both FedEx and UPS scan and give me a receipt for packages. When I bring a package to the local general store, they scan it and give me a UPS receipt. As someone suggested, taking a picture of you handing it to the driver is a good idea.

Related - A video camera on a home captured a driver delivering a package, taking a picture of it to prove he delivered it, and then picking up the package and walking away with it.

My first Nikon was a FTN in 1970 and now shoot with a Z6 with Z lenses. Zero complaints!

I think the discontinuing of DSLRs is a mistake. Both types have their place and uses with some advantages to both types.
I have had my Canon R7 for a few months now, I really like it, but still use my DSLR bodies also.
The one thing I really like about DSLR over mirrorless is when I am out after birds etc. I can use the DSLR for a spotting scope without draining my batteries, the R7 I have to turn it on to use it for a scope to search for birds in the trees etc. Which means if I am going to be out more than an hour or two I need to carry a pocket full of extra batteries. Good thing the R7 uses the same batteries as my four DSLRs, so I have plenty of them.

That is about as weak an “advantage” as there could be. So I carry more batteries. No big deal considering my mirrorless are superior to the DSLR’s in every way. I really don’t think they should continue making DSLR’s just so you can use them as spotting scopes.
