The carrier delivered the new D850 package this morning. The shipping box was visibly crushed. The camera box itself looked old with torn corners, a crease on the top and definitely not looking new. The dealer was contacted and a return authorization was received. What also has me concerned is the return. You put the supplied return label on the box and hand it to the FedEx person. I am told that no receipt will be given to me as proof of giving the package to the shipper. All total, what should have been a celebration is now a bad decision. It is hoped the dealer issues a prompt replacement and that transaction goes smoothly. This camera is very expensive and having dealt with this dealer for several years, this transaction tastes like lemons. Thank you for your time in reading this.

tiphareth51!

Too late now! A good idea would be to take a cell photo of the FedEx person receiving the package with the label showing and its condition. Some of the carriers now take a photo when they drop off a package. Can you track the return? Another good idea might be to copy the return authorization label as well.

Be well! Ed

Also, FedEx gives a receipt for receiving and shipping the package. If not offered, just ask. BTW, did you buy the box or the camera inside? Any new equipment I've purchased is well packaged / protected for any rough handling.

Great suggestion. I will remember it when the package is drooped off to the shipper. Thank you.

Unless the shipper and the camera store are the same company, the store made the mistake, not you.

Now is not the time to buy a new dslr if you can get by with your old one. Used ones are $1000 less. Bidenflation is not in full swing yet and in recession these prices will drop like a rock, especially now that Nikon Canon will not be makeing dslrs anymore and Sigma and Canon announced no more DSLR lenses.

I think the discontinuing of DSLRs is a mistake. Both types have their place and uses with some advantages to both types.
I have had my Canon R7 for a few months now, I really like it, but still use my DSLR bodies also.
The one thing I really like about DSLR over mirrorless is when I am out after birds etc. I can use the DSLR for a spotting scope without draining my batteries, the R7 I have to turn it on to use it for a scope to search for birds in the trees etc. Which means if I am going to be out more than an hour or two I need to carry a pocket full of extra batteries. Good thing the R7 uses the same batteries as my four DSLRs, so I have plenty of them.

I am headed to my local camera store to buy a second new D850 this week while they are on sale. I have bought a variety of new and used equipment from a number of sources, including this forum, but I would never buy a used D850 when attractive new pricing is available. They are just too complex and too susceptible to hidden damage from improper handling. (I know this from experience.)

The D850 is a great camera, with nothing approaching its capabilities available for anywhere close to a comparable price. (No, the Z7/Z7II is not comparable.) It is a great choice and will be a great purchase.

I like the DSLR but I don't think discontinuing them is a mistake. Although the OP bought a DSLR but they don't sell well.

I use the (free) supplied shipping label when I return inexpensive items like some defective ink cartridges or label tapes, not cameras and lenses. If I need to ship expensive gear for refund, replacement, or repair, I don't mind paying the difference for the more premium shipping methods where there are signed receipts and reliable tracking numbers.

Receiving a damaged package and possibly a faulty camera is aggravation enough. An item lost, stolen. or damaged in return shipping is incredibly aggravating, and tedious and can lead to a protracted settlement.

Folks are buying massive volumes of merchandise online. The shipping companies such as UPS and FedEx are sub-contracting smaller delivery services. Wherehouse and shipping depots have become more automated with robotic package systems. The porch pirates are running rampant. Nothing like good old bills of lading, proper paperwork, and signatures if you need to make a claim!

Unless someone tampered with that package or it was accidentally damaged in shipping, I would not trust that dealer. If it was purchased as a NEW camera the original box should have been clean and intact and enough good packaging material should have been used to ensure that minor external damage to the shipping carton would not damage the camera

I speak from hard experience!

Well this will ruffle some feathers. I started with Nikon. Their products are not reliable, at least on the lower to mid end. My first camera was a D100 I sold it and the person who bought it told me years later it does 2 years after buying for me. My next camera was a D70 and that model had a known defect that the power supply would come apart and Nikon would have to fix it. A lot of D70 owners had this problem. Next came oil on the sensor problems and other issues.

Canon is built in Japan for the most part, Nikon is built in Singapore or Korea except for their to single digit series and this year none of their cameras are built in Japan. Japanese quality is still the best IMHO.

But my main point was that prices for DSLRs will only continue to plummet and BandH and Adorama will drop prices as the supply of DSLRs stay high because no one buys them.

So I have no problems buying used Canon, Nikon not so much but that has been my experience. The D100 was Nikons first affordable (at 3k dollars) digital camera.

Sorry to hear about your poor experience with Nikons. My experience has been quite different as I have been buying and using Nikon products for 50 years, have never been disappointed and never had the need to return any for repair. Still satisfied with my D5.

I don't buy things to sell, I buy them to use. Even when I get a newer one, I usually keep the older one for backup or give it to a family member or friend.

They don't sell that is Nikon can't sell many of these DSLR's so they discontinue them. I am not talking about reselling these cameras. In fact you in a few years you may be able to sell these DSLR's on the used market for good money. I am talking about the manufacturers. There are still people buying them like the OP but not many. When you can't sell a lot of something you either stop making them or having to sell them for a higher price which is unlikely so not making them is the obvious choice.

The D5 was made in Japan. I was the last model.
I experienced what others experience. All over DPRevew back in the day.
I don't think Nikon is terrible.

It is not as good as Canon Imho
