One odd part about being the father of a teen girl is that he will never have a clue about anything. If the father were my son, I might advise him to talk to the cell phone company and ensure the girls cell phone use won't cost him a fortune.

The most versatile are the bridge cameras. They feature a very large zoom range, a viewfinder which I demand, and a usable flash. I love my Canon SX50 HS, the SX70 HS is the current model. Also available are the Panasonic Lumix DC-FZ80 or the DMC-FZ300 with lesser megapixels but f/2.8 lens, Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H300, and the Nikon P950 or P1000, both with extra zoom range.

There are also the pocketables such as my Lumix DCZS80, or Sony DSC-HX99, but they suffer from weak flashes and far less zoom range.

Both body styles are available with 1" sensors rather than the 1/2.3" of the above models, but with reduced zoom range. The Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS200 and the larger Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ2500 or DMCZS1000 as well as Sony RX100 and larger RX10 models are examples.

Don't waste money on a camera if she has a decent phone. She is only going to upload to social media and she could easily leave it somewhere if not use to carrying vs their phone they will protect with their life. More importantly is she has some type G outlet adapters so she can recharge whatever she has.

My walkaround point and shoot is a Canon SX710 and I love it. There probably are newer versions, but mine is great.

My 15-year-old granddaughter is going to London for a week on a school trip. She has been advised to bring a point and shoot camera. I don't know what is available or what would be appropriate. I would welcome your advice.

I have found nearly any of the Sony point and shoot cameras have the best lenses. Much better than what I experienced in both the Nikon and Canon---point and shoot lines. The Sonys are preceded with DSC in their names. Good features all around and some even use AA batteries which she could replace anywhere.-------Good luck ----Some have Zeiss lenses, and some Sony---both better than what the competition used.----------

No argument here, but their newer models are pretty expensive, and who knows if a 15 year old who grew up with phones will maintain an interest in using a camera afterward. It would be a gamble, especially considering how good phone cameras have become. Quite frankly, I'm not sure why the trip planners would call for a camera to be taken along when it's quite possible that all or most who are going will be taking phones.

I implied an old model. Anything in the past 15 years and above 5megapixels would be just fine. I have one, for instance in 5.5mpixel DSC----but don't remember the number which takes excellent pictures with AA batteries and probably sells for "little over nothing?" She could drop it ---loose it and not be out much----yet could take excellent pictures. Then if she want fancier models into the bridge catagory--the DSC 828 is excellent, but more complicated and costs $100. for what was a thousand dollar mirrorless.---------

I concur with all those that advise the use of a good cell phone camera. I have worked with quite a few teenagers and they are all about using their cell phones. They are NOT going to pull out a clunky camera loaned to them by their parents or grandparents when all their peers are shooting with cell phones and sharing the images instantly.

Most newer cell phones are usable worldwide so just make sure they have a plan that is reasonable in cost and allows them full use of their phone and camera.

I'd go with one of the previous Sony RX100 models... They are fantastic and can be bought used for a couple of Franklins
