Well I, too, have had a D850 for many years, have loved it in so many ways, but am trying to sell it now and move to mirrorless as I am finding it much too heavy! I am 80.
Was just wondering what mirrorless camera are you thinking I of moving to?
I am thinking of the very soon to be released Sony a7R V, and just feel I want to treat myself to something special and at this time Sony seems the way to go for me, although I was really thinking of the Canon R5 for a while

I did that and went back to Nikon. Could not stand the Sony menus. A big question for you is, how many f mount lenses do you have? You can use them on the Z cameras with the FTZ or FTZII adapter

By the way, I learned talking to a Nikon rep the last time I was at my camera store that Nikon will be making a very significant change to their product support strategy (if it hasn't already happened). Support and factory repair will be maintained for previous and one previous model only.

Man I hate to hear that. I was at a professional camera repair shop a couple of months ago and learned that Nikon will no longer sell parts to independent shops (I have no idea how long this policy has been in effect), so many repairs have to be sent to Nikon only.

This coupled with what you are telling us truly makes the digital camera a “disposable” commodity. And a very expensive one at that.

Will be interesting to see if their competition will (or already has) follow suit.

You'll love it, as I do mine.

After a lot of fence sitting...took the plunge and ordered the Nikon D850. At 72 this will probably be my last camera purchase. My D810 is very loved so hoping the D850 will be also. If anyone has tips to share, that would be appreciated. Thanks!

This is very similar to what Sony has been doing (in a different way) for a long time. It's intended to promote sale of new cameras...the biggest impact will be on the used market. I understand (but do not have confirmation) that one big retailer in Austin has stopped buying or trading for any "mirror box" cameras because of the difficulty of being able to provide support for used cameras sold. The other thing that is happening is that prices for used parts via the "behind the scenes" dealer networks are increasing significantly.

I love my D850 (and D500s) and do not foresee getting rid of them. But as they join the unsupported ranks, I'll be working to be very careful when using them.

You never know. At 72 I upgraded to an enthusiast level DSLR. Now 78, I just upgraded to mirrorless.

At age 79, I am still LOVING my D-850 having sold my D750 several years ago for it. factsbob gave good advice when said "get good glass". This is important.......no retread tires for a brand new high-performance car. I have and love the Nikon 24-70 (mostly any version) is terrific carry-around. The super duper Nikon 70-200e (many said best 70-200 ever manufactured of any brand) fantastic but I warn you, very heavy. With this camera, you have plenty of learning resources as stated by other in this thread, e.g Steve Perry, books, You-Tube. Learn, go slowly, and have fun. BTW, I have recently discovered the fun of video with this camera but wow, big learning curve with the software (Premier Pro). Oh, btw, since the D850 has ben out for a few years, good Nikon glass is available for less $$ now than before. My 24-70 was a Nikon refurbished from B&H.

Hello Vladimir200. Thank you for your response. It is agreed that a great camera needs great glass. I think that is sufficiently covered with my current lenses. They have been fantastic on my D810 and should be equally as great on the D850. Wildlife, ice art, and aurora are my favorite subjects.

I have 2 bodies
The 850 & the d500
2 lenses for the 500, the kit 16 -80 2.8 + 70-300
And
35 2.8
50 1.4
85 2.8
105 macro 2.8
70-200 2.8 Ii
Fisheye (manual focus)

I tried my friend’s Z9 for an hour and it was a great camera, I should get it, but really felt it was very heavy.

I mean the new Sony mirrorless camera have a new menu that I have read are much easier to navigate than their older models.

I will only be getting 3 lenses at the beginning, and I have read that the 24-105 f4 is a great all-purpose lens that is very sharp.

I will also get their 79-200f4 which is much lighter than what I have now and I understand is not available in the new Z mount lens that Nikon has brought out at this time!

Was going to wait to see if/when a Z8 was going to be released but no talk/ rumours that I am hearing at all!

Comments please

I’m 78 and love my 850 but I just purchased a Z9. I like the challenge of a new piece of technology. It’s been a long ride since my Brownie Hawkeye that I still have and it’s been a great trip. Beats chasing a golf ball in the woods!

I shoot Canon but the Nikon D850 is a game changer. Next time when I’m in B&H it’s worth taking a peek. I just may change my mind for this baby. I have been waiting forever for the Canon R3, now just drooling over it.

I have 2 bodies br The 850 & the d500 br 2 len... (show quote)

You have good lenses, and they will all work with a Z9. I cannot tell you what to do, I can only tell what I did.

So I had all Nikon gear. Multiple bodies and loads of pro glass. The Sony came out. Looks beautiful and sexy. Great reviews. Since I have to have the latest and greatest I web through the mental anguish of justifying its purchase. I knew I was going to buy it, just a matter of convincing myself to pull the trigger.

Well, I pulled the trigger. Bought the Sony A7R and all of the pro G lenses. Hated the A7R, images were great, using the camera was a PIA. They then came out with the A7RII. Bought that. It was a little better and I was a bit more used to their menus.

Now I had two systems. That was head trauma for me. I’m a Nikon guy. Have loads of Nikon glass. I decided to stick with Nikon and simplify my level of stress and confusion. Sold both Sony bodies and my suite of pro lenses. Lost over $10k in just 6 months. I am very happy with my Nikon gear.

Keep us posted please.
Best

Hi RL

Yes, I think that the menus from your older A7R and the soon to be released (October 26th is the announcement) A7RV will be different, but the truth
I have been trying to talk myself into getting the Z9 for a long time, but I do not do video, and I think that the Z9 would just not be the right camera for me.
I am a photographer at a summer children's day camp & overbite camp (spend Monday through Thursday at the day camp & then drive 3 hours to spend Friday to Sunday at the residential overnight camp, where I will take at least 600 pictures/day at the day camp, and around 900 pics/day at the overnight camp, edit, and post on the camp website the pics I like so everyone can see what the campers & staff do each day. I also print about 225 ics/day to give to the kids, both campers and staff, to hang on their walls, from 4" x 6" to 13" x 19", using either an Epson ET-8550 printer or an HP 24" Z9+ printer.
The rest of the year I shoot landscapes, architecture, street photography, family, sports, basically a little of everything, and try to print for myself what I or my wife, feel we should put on on a wall for a time!
Hardly any video!!

Your thoughts?

Steve

Hi Steve.
I do not do any video. 100% still. Kids camp sounds like action all of the time. Loads of opportunity to get loads of great photos. Z9 would be perfect.

I really don’t think you can make a mistake with either system, they are both very good. I just think of all of the Nikon glass you have that will be useless to you. Two systems is a bit of a challenge.
I love my Z9, I have 2. Transitioning from my D850 to Z9 was pretty easy, system wise and ergonomically.
I know myself, once I make a decision that I want something, nothing stops me. Sometimes I’m right and sometimes I am wrong. Either way here, you can’t go wrong.

Another thing to consider, you’re going to spend a ton of money buying Sony lenses. Why not spend that money on the Z9 and if you don’t like it, very easy to sell. Then you can buy the Sony.
