The pouch that holds the flash. A shirt or pants pocket. A small pocket on your camera bag? An empty film holder. (PM me if you don't have any and would like some of them). A zip lock plastic bag.

Methinks you just don't want to bother with it, and that is fine too. So if thats how you feel there no need to say any more than that.

I'm wondering what the masses have to say about this. How many bother using the plastic cover that slides over and protects the hot shoe contacts on top of your camera. Is it for looks, or do you feel the protection it provides is important. I have an Olympus Pen-F (pictured) with as you can see a matching silver plastic cover over the contacts. Well, maybe I should say I "had". I've looked everywhere it should be, and everywhere it shouldn't be. I kind of like the way it looks and I dont use flash that much, so I'm thinking of going to the trouble of painting a black one that I found silver. I do think Ill like the silver look, more than the black, but how necessary is it at all. Thanks for your responses.

I shoot with Nikons and they don't come with a cover so I put them on all of my cameras for protection and they look good as well.

Some say they Nikons do come with covers some say they don't. I have had new Nikon cameras come with the cover, and also without the cover.

It really does't matter, I always keep spares, because I manage to lose them now and then, so I can use a spare if the camera doesn't come with one in the box. But I still think it's petty to leave it out.

I like the covers that have a level bubble....it just looks good and you're right, I buy a pack of three because every now and then I'll loose one.

My d7200 came with a hot shoe cover and it actually stayed in place.

FYI: I tried some of those with the bubble from Amazon. Would NOT fit Nikon Z9. Sent them back.

Each of my digital Pentaxes did come with a hot shoe cover.

I too bought one of the silver ones for my D750. It fits more snugly than the plastic one that came on the camera, and looks better too.

Yet anotere philosophical deep drive into PHOTOGRAPHY (excuse my sarcasm)! Well, it's differet and may beat the ones, as to the popularity, of filters, lens caps, lens shades and the pros and cons of post-processing. Controversial stuff.

My advice: If you don't need it, just consider it packing material and throw it away!

My hot shoe is in constant use- it may frequently accommodate a Speedlight or a radio trigger, however, I sometimes use my camera on industrial and constructions site where the could be some hasty handling, airborne dust and dirt so I will cover up as much of the camera as possible and I do use that little insert.

Used to be that all that was in that shoe was the synchronization contacts- now there is a whole bunch of newfangled stuff that can cause malfunction if it gets dirty or possibly shorted out if it accidentally comes in contact with metal or metal fillings. If I lose the little insert, I have a few hot shoes to PC cord adapters that will serve the purpose.

Hey- I also save some of the styrofoam packaging for a few of my camera bodies for use when I fly to a location and the gear has to be handled like baggage- just so much you can carry on nowadays!

The 800lb gorilla in the room is that a Nikon without a BS-1 Accessory Shoe Cap $2.00
https://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/cap-cover/bs-1-accessory-shoe-cap.html
the accessory shoe contacts can (and likely will) oxidize over time causing misfires...

AND a compelling reason why all Nikon DSLR Professional bodies have a Flash Sync Terminal plus a 10 pin connector.

For those here that claim that they have never had a misfire... Really?
I believe what they are actually saying that this isn't a major problem (for them).

So you want to appear clueless and nonprofessional in front of a high end client?
Have a misfire on an executive portrait session... a major coup de grace.

btw, all advanced Nikon cameras come with the BS-1 in a separate clear plastic sleeve (i.e. it's that strange thing you threw out with the packaging). For those who claim their camera never came with one maybe go check the box again... it's there and has BS-1 printed on it.

I primarily shoot product now and I use (and love) my workhorse camera(s) with Flash Sync Terminals.
Which btw all come with an ATTACHED rubber protector cap. There are many compelling reasons to pony up for a Nikon DSLR professional body... (besides a Flash Sync Terminal... lol)

Let me end my dissertation with this Exciting News Flash (pun intended)
The Flagship Nikon Z9: "In a first for a Nikon mirrorless camera, the Z9 has a PC flash sync terminal for studio-based portrait photographers." YES! Thank you so much Nikon for actually caring about studio-based portrait photographers
