Hot shoe cover up

I'm wondering what the masses have to say about this. How many bother using the plastic cover that slides over and protects the hot shoe contacts on top of your camera. Is it for looks, or do you feel the protection it provides is important. I have an Olympus Pen-F (pictured) with as you can see a matching silver plastic cover over the contacts. Well, maybe I should say I "had". I've looked everywhere it should be, and everywhere it shouldn't be. I kind of like the way it looks and I dont use flash that much, so I'm thinking of going to the trouble of painting a black one that I found silver. I do think Ill like the silver look, more than the black, but how necessary is it at all. Thanks for your responses.

I've never had a camera that came with a hot shoe cover. Is this an Olympus thing? Mine have always been Nikons.

I have always used them if they came with the camera, otherwise no. Then somebody gave me a few with a bubble level. I slipped them in the cameras that were naked. I don't use the bubble as I can see what I need in the viewfinder. They don't hurt anything.

My Ftb came with one.
Not sure how much it may have benefited the camera.
But I'm REALLY glad the camera came with a flash PC cover for the front of the body!
Put you finger over/on THAT when the flash is ready to fire.....

I have always used hot shoe covers for protection. I have also bought a silver metal Nikon cover for my silver Df and a brown Nikon double Z cover for my Z 6II.

I use em till I lose em!
I would frame that camera and lens picture and hang it. What a gorgeous shot of a beautifully machined piece of art!

Scratches? Digs?
My two camera accessory shoes never got buggered in 20+ years.
(I left it on the one camera so I wouldn't loose it. The other camera did not have one.)

I use them to keep dirt and saliva and other objects off of the contacts and to keep numnuts from touching the hot shoe accidentally.

I have and use several hot shoe covers. One is gold colored, one silver, one black, and one with a spirit level incorporated. This allows me to quickly determine which camera I want to use simply by looking at the top of them. The secondary benefit is keeping dirt and crap off electrical contacts within the hot shoe.

My Pentax cameras seem to come with hotshoe covers. But I don't think all the used bodies had one when I got it. I don't bith keeping the plastic covers on, I am not even sure where I stores mine. Some of my old film bodies had them too. Just tiny parts to lose.

Nikon used to supply them with their cameras, my first Nikon, a D90 had one. Then Nikon got too tight a***d to supply them, just like their lens hoods...I bought 5 in a bag from Wish.com for $5...Nikon wanted AUD$20 for one.
The Wish ones even had a spirit level in them..never used it but it's there if ever I do..they are also rubber and slide in a grip very well.

I use a thumb rest (for all cameras) that fits into the hot shoe slot. I find these helpful and useful holding the cameras.
