(I’m looking for clarification of a news brief, not for comments on the shootings)

I read a news brief earlier today that said the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District (UCISD) has suspended its entire police force. My question is: Is it common in parts of the country for a school district to have its own police force? I’ve lived mostly in the Northeast and police departments are controlled by municipal governments, not by school districts. Am I missing something?

I was wondering the same thing.

Here in Albuquerque the Albuquerque school district has their own police force. Their uniforms are similar to the Albuquerque Police Dept., but they’re two separate entities. Many school districts Texas also have their own police departments, depending on the size of the school district.

I read up on this a bit. Working in a school district years ago and subbing just before retiring at a school that had a SRO (School Resource Officer) there, I wanted to see what WA state does. It was difficult to find out what WA does but I did find a website that had a good article on it nation wide (https://education.uconn.edu) - article is "The Prevalence and the Price of Police in Schools". It may be a bit more than you want to check out but it seems there are Federal Laws and funding that is available to the states. It is done differently in different places but it seems that whether it is the school district or a department of the police that works with the school district that funnels the funds to the districts, the districts do the hiring.

Let’s be careful. This thread could end up in The Attic. It is quite common for specific regions of a city to have their version of a police force. In Washington, DC there is individual monument police, museum police, capitol building Police, etc. In NYC there is transit police (merged back with NYPD) housing police, hospital police, correction police, sanitation police etc. There are some limitations and each has their jurisdictions. As a result, you can’t swing a stick without encountering a police officer. In the case of the Uvalde school district they had funding for the school district. Now funds will be levied by the city govt or even the state govt.

I did my best to keep this thread out of the Attic.

I think they mean theyre going to suspend the use of the police officers used in the schools, some schools here in Texas use off duty or assigned officers for safety and security according to how dangerous an area the school is located, or how rowdy ( high schools) have proven to be.

Thanks for being careful. I hoped the caveat up front to would keep the comments from becoming attic worthy.
I know that many large cities have police forces with specific jurisdictions but I’ve never heard of one that was under control of a school district and that’s what I was trying to clarify.

What you’re saying makes sense. Many school districts use off duty police as security but from what I’ve read that’s not the case in Uvalde. The police force in question is under the control of the school district.

Go to schools in some parts of NYC or other large cities and you will see why there should be police officers on site.

I think you missed the point of my comment. I’m not questioning whether there should or shouldn’t be police in schools. I was trying to find out if there are other cities that have a separate police force under the control of a school district.

I live in the greater Baltimore area. There are several universities around that have their own police force as wel as Balto. city. Johs Hopkins University is trying to establish one.

I hadn’t thought about colleges/universities…most of them do have their own police departments. Thanks for the reminder.

Philadelphia schools have their own police.
