My question is: Is it common in parts of the country for a school district to have its own police force?

Clay County Florida School District has it's own police. The county Sheriff's office provided officers before they established their own force.

I think they mean theyre going to suspend the use of the police officers used in the schools, some schools here in Texas use off duty or assigned officers for safety and security according to how dangerous an area the school is located, or how rowdy ( high schools) have proven to be.

I hope this helps?

Police force...security force...just semantics.

Not that unusual.

it was reported that they fired a recently hired officer that had been on the police department when the shootings occurred. She allegedly had shown up as part of the police response unprepared and was accused of not taking appropriate action. The current issue was whether the school administration knew of this alleged failure to perform and hired her anyway or did they not know implying that their vetting process failed.

I forgot to mention in NYC many schools keep “School Safety Officers” on site. They have similar uniforms, badges but no weapons. They have the power of arrest and can detain. I realize things have changed when I was a kid. But I as a parent feel my kids are well protected. While my children went to Fredonia University, Rose Hulman University, Virginia Tech and Bramson College they had police officers.

One of the unique aspects of working in a NYC city hospital (Bellevue) the hospital police went to the same Police Academy as NYPD. They have all of the aspects of jurisdiction and police powers and authority. These officers sign a waiver and do not carry weapons.

I read read that. It’s a separate issue.

Yes, many NYC schools have Safety Officers but it doesn’t have a police force that is under the control of the school district as is the case in Uvalde. It’s also true that “campus police” are pretty much a fixture at colleges/universities.

I hadn’t thought about colleges/universities…most of them do have their own police departments. Thanks for the reminder.

The University of Texas (this incudes ALL University of Texas institutions) have police officers on site. These officers are trained as fully functional police officers and their jurisdiction is the entire state of Texas. The governor of Texas can and does send officers to locations to help with the addition of needs during any state crises (normally natural disasters or major accidents).

Thanks for the input. I think most universities have their own police forces but I’d never heard of a local school district that had one.

As you say, these fixtures may need to be dusted off once in a while. It may serve some benefit for these “people” to be re-evaluated and be re-trained.

(I’m looking for clarification of a news brief, not for comments on the shootings)

I read a news brief earlier today that said the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District (UCISD) has suspended its entire police force. My question is: Is it common in parts of the country for a school district to have its own police force? I’ve lived mostly in the Northeast and police departments are controlled by municipal governments, not by school districts. Am I missing something?

Today many districts are hiring full time security.
Also hospitals have huge security forces.
The local college here has a full police force that supplements the city police as well.

Don't forget about t***sportation police. If you remember the five police officers k**led in Dallas in 2016, one of them was a DART officer (Dallas Area Rapid T***sit). At one time, Dallas even had its own Park Police, but they've now been subsumed by the DPD.
