These lists are entirely subjective and somewhat generational. Some really great shows are simply forgotten over time. I Love Lucy always gets mentioned, but what about Perry Mason, The Twilight Zone, Car 54 Where Are You, Dobie Gillis, Route 66 and others of that general era?

In MY humble opinion, no list is complete without Everybody Loves Raymond, Scrubs, China Beach, Magnum PI, Little House on the Prairie, The Wonder Years and All in the Family. In MY humble opinion, MASH was on for too long and devolved into the Alan Alda ego show. But that's me.

That's why I asked for lists. Somebody may wonder, for instance, why I put Gunsmoke on my list. I can remember coming home after work and looking forward to watching it in re-runs. I picked Friend over Seinfeld, for instance, because the writing was just superb (better than Seinfeld), and we can watch them over and over. They're just funny. The Honeymooners? Not only funny, but the template for all situation comedies to follow. Jackie Gleason and Audrey Meadows....perfect foils. But that's what's great about lists. Everybody has their favorites and that brings up a lot of great shows.

Always had to laugh at China Beach. Been there. Literally got the shirt (actually a sweat shirt that said “stolen from China Beach”) and almost drowned in the South China Sea in a rip tide there. It was actually only a small Quonset hut with a basketball court/gym inside and a roach coach outside for food.

I can remember when the viewing week revolved around Hill Street Blues. When I was a kid, Thunderbirds was big, As I grew older, MASH was pretty popular. In recent times Friends was popular, not that I could see the appeal, but I learnt to love Big Bang Theory, Two and a half men, these days very little seems to appeal to me.

How did they define "best?" Longest running? Most innovative? Highest rating? Created new social norms? Dave O has a good list and I might add some family dramas like Sisters or Parenthood. Taxi deserves a nod for sitcoms and St. Elsewhere for medical drama

Loved St. Elsewhere.

Any list without Seinfeld and All In The Family cannot be serious.
