I had the greatest mil. She has since gone to the mil home in the sky. Now it is my turn. Do you have any idea how hard it is to be a "good" mil? Dils can be difficult too. They control the grandkids opinions city vs rural, animals smell and there is a lot of dirt. I should join a circus. Getting pretty good at walking a tightrope!

Yeah I know not everybody is perfect. But I'm not saying I dont try to get along with her, because obviously I wouldnt be wanting to go around her if I didnt want a good relationship with her. She's put me through it. and still is. But I do nothing but try and brush it off my shoulders the best I can and keep a smile on my face. no matter how bad she has hurt my feeling. I just have to vent about it or ill go nuts.

Mothers in law should be a reason alone to stay away from poligamy!

The actress who plays the MIL on "Everybody Loves Raymond" has mastered her craft so well that she makes people dislike her just because of the part she plays so well.

Well I never had any problems with my MIL as we lived 900 miles from her. Now my mother was a different story. She treated my wife horribly. I finally gave her an ultimatum. I told her if you don't like my wife, who by the way is a wonderful woman, been married to her for 50 years, there is nothing I can do about it. However you will do well to remember that I had no choice in who my mother was. I did have a choice in who I married. Seeing as how you choose not to be civil to her we no longer will attend any family functions at which you are present. Your problem is solved. I stuck to it to.
Well I never had any problems with my MIL as we li... (show quote)

I'd marry you in a heart beat! Bravo!

Well, my thoughts...First off "Everybody Loves Raymond" is pure Hollywood. It has to eventually end good. I'm pushing 50, and I hunt and enjoy the outdoors. A few years ago I was visiting some friends in the southern part of the state, happened to be wearing camo (We just finished a pheasant hunt) and on my way back up north here I stopped at a place for some grub. Some nut ball decided to ask how I could kill poor defenseless animals, etc etc. ( I felt sorry for the guy she was with he looked like a cowering puppy. ) I was pissed during her tirade, but then I remembered something my Grandpa said years before, and I think it might help everyone deal with impossible people....Here we go: "NEVER TEACH A PIG TO SING. IT WASTES YOUR TIME AND ANNOYS THE PIG". There's just no talking to some folks. Pig-headed or not. Good Luck to you.
8-)

6 years eh? Well, I've been married for 38 years - and honey - it ain't never gonna get any better. In fact - it might get worse. I have the MIL from HELL. I quit going to any family functions for about 5 years. Then my husband asked me to please go one year to a family reunion - hosted by his MOM. I caved. Nothing had changed - she still the same self centered woman I met 38 ago. And like I told my husband - if I had met his mother before we got married - I would have never married him. The only people that work are her children (do you understand this statement?) All the spouses of her children actually hold down jobs, make money - but her children are the only ones that work! She wouldn't even go to her son in laws ordaination but he wasn't family (this after being married to her daughter for over 15 years.) I told her we were going (my huband and myself). On our way home my husband asked why we were going and I said "AND HOW LONG DO YOU HAVE TO BE MARRIED INTO THIS FAMILY BEFORE YOUR ARE FAMILY?" That was the end of that conversation and needless to say we went and we were the only 'FAMILY" there, and my husband was glad we did go. But the MIL from HELL still exists and is alive and well 1/4 of a mile away. So, just so you are aware, YOU ARE NOT ALONE, if that gives you any comfort!

So, kids. The thought for the day is.... If you stop and think about your parents and how they treat your spouse. Are you defending your spouse the way you should? If you don't like your in-laws treatment of you be sure your spouse isn't getting the same thing. Maybe your spouse will look at their folks differently and stand up for you. My MIL was HELL on me and ONE of my daughters. It took a long time, but my husband finally stood up for us and I let him know how much I appreciated it. It is too bad there are sooo many vindictive people in the world.
