It may have been frustrating but you certainly didn't come how empty handed. This is a great shot in so many ways.

If you go to the Adirondacks, you should expect rain. So, we had a good trip despite the wet stuff; and I got a nice photo. Win-win. Thanks for taking a look.

Thank you. I knew I would have to bracket the shot to get the detail that I wanted in the canoe. It's a lot of fun when things come together. Thanks for your input.

I live here... spent 1000 nights all over the park- winter spring summer and fall!! Recognize your Hornbeck... sitting on the bottom can be uncomfortable trying to paddle when it rains huh? Why I prefer an elevated seat- plus I guess climbing out over a beaver dam or onto a bog is becoming much more difficult for me LOL.

Rain is why we sarchasticaly call them the AdiRAINdacks... but usually we are able to catch some nice days. I find the transition of good to bad weather to be the most interesting time to shoot. Sunny perfect weather being the worst.

If you plan for rain, and expect it, its not so bad. Anytime you venture there you need to bring warm, cool, wet and dry weather gear- swimsuit and down jacket often makes the same pack LOL, and on more than one occasion, both are worn. Can make for a heavy backpack. But you are prepared and thus comfortable. Nothing stops us but time... not even black flies.

Thanks for responding. I agree with you about the weather. The photo was taken on Horseshoe Lake, not far from Tupper Lake.

Stayed there before... on our way into Lows (Bog River Flow) before the gate was opened the next morning by the Ranger for the season... I have never paddled it though. Horseshoe eventually flows into Tupper, but before it does, it flows into Hitchens seen here.

Did you get to Lows? Or Hitchens pond? There is a wonderful waterfalls you pass by just as you travel over the Bog River on your way to Horseshoe right before it flows into Tupper. You can see it from the road. There are tons of ponds and small lakes right around there you can carry a mile or so with that feather weight boat.

Somehow I missed this entire fall, seems work and people plan stuff that screws up every weekend... then poof- its over. Even have next weekend screwed up : (

Attached is a pic of your area. It's the overlook over Hitchens pond looking north east . If you look very closely, you can make out the line of traintracks (left to right), a line of pines in the yellow ground cover which is bog that will be very green in a few weeks of this photo . It's about a mile climb up to this bare rock outcropping. If you could see around the corner to the left, you might barely see the far shore of Horseshoe, but I think it is tucked in under the trees and a hill...

This is looking downriver on the Bog River. Hitchens and Lows are lakes formed by dams built on bog river that were built in 1903 by Abbot Low. When we first came here, the ruins of his very extensive and very impressive "Camp" was still there. ( thats the road to the camp from Sabattis you can seen the foreground- this road goes right over the main upper dam.) You could walk all through his camp then. It's all State land now, and they remove all structures.. all that is left now is the footprint.. and thankfully the dams. They leave them, unless they become too expensive to keep.

Must have been fantastic in its heyday! However now we all get to use the waterways and climb his mountains!

My wife and I are quite novice paddlers. We did have a chance to put in at the lower Dam and then paddled to Hichins Pond. We did not climb up the Overlook because we were wearing very flimsy "boat" shoes and did not have any suitable footwear for even a relatively short mile hike up to the overlook.

I've taken lots of shots of the falls that cascade into Tupper Lake. We camped at one of the free places not far from those falls on Horseshoe Lake. The dirt access road to the Lower Dam is going to be closed next year for repairs on the dam. I'm glad we had a chance to paddle the area before the road closes. Great to talk to you about the area.

A wonderful image, Erich…one of your best IMCO.

That is Horseshoe Lake. If you are driving from Long Lake toward Tupper Lake, you turn left before you get to Tupper onto a rather awful, marginally paved, road on your left and drive about 6 miles. The photo was taken from a free campsite along that road that had canoe access to the lake.

Thanks for taking a look
