Inmates were hooded when outside the cell, never saw or heard another inmate until changes were made in the late 1800's. Speaking was prohibited, report told while we were there one inmate refused to stop trying to talk to others, he was put in a straight jacket and gagged.
Guards wore wool socks over their boots as not to make any sound.
