Eastern State Penitentiary Philadelphia
Construction 1821 to 1829, closed 1970
Inmates were hooded when outside the cell, never saw or heard another inmate until changes were made in the late 1800's. Speaking was prohibited, report told while we were there one inmate refused to stop trying to talk to others, he was put in a straight jacket and gagged.
Guards wore wool socks over their boots as not to make any sound.

I know about it but I'll pass, LOL.
I always wanted to be there for Bastille Day when actors in costume threw Tasty Cakes off the walls to the people (let them eat cake) below but that's not done any more.

I can see how tossing Tasty Cakes at people could get a little messy, but it sounds like fun.
Incredible shots. The stories those walls could tell. I would like to spend a night in there. Ghosts must roam the halls

Ghosts of some of the nastiest criminals this country had.
I've been there a few times over the years and the place is quite creepy. The nicest cell in the place was Al Capone's cell, where he spent 7 months back in 1929.
Nice pictures of a place I would not like to visit.
Very nice set of images. I especially like your reflection photo as well as your interesting narrative.
Great set of shots of the old place--enjoyed this series!
Now that's a really depressing place - excellent set!
A great place for some of our todays politicians .
