Three days of camping in the Adirondacks and I only got one photo that is worth posting. We had three days of rain; but, during an interlude, I was able to get this evening shot of my canoe. Our campsite was right on the lake and this shot is definitely "staged". I used a Nikkor 20mm on a tripod set as low as I could get it comfortably. This is a three shot bracketed photo so that I would get some detail in the shadows without blowing out the sky.

"I remember that fateful day that granpaw, he was a birchbark, went down for the third time just right there on starboard. It was a dark and stormy ..." the reminiscent story goes.

I could not resist.

A very well done scene that evokes the ageless feeling of canoeing on a lake. Many stories.

Thank you. Some other members have commented and made some suggestions. One suggestion was that the shoreline is a bit bright and bisects the photo in a way. In this next version, I used the clone stamp set to "darken" and just darkened the line. It does not remove it, because it was actually there in nature; but it does make it more subtle. I think I like it this way. I always value the opinions of members. Do you think the second version is better or would you prefer the original?

It has been ages since I got into a canoe. But I do remember pushing off with a target in front. That bright line is the far shore that you are about to go to when you push off. To me, it makes the shot more animated in that it focuses on the canoe prepared to be used to cross the breadth to the "far shore". Darkening the "line" just makes the shot very static, as in still life. So, it is after all, your shot, your choice.

I can see why you want to hang it on the wall Erich! Only getting one shot in three days doesn’t really matter if this is the result, does it?

The puddle of water on the foreground rock substantiates the story about having rain. Hope you were able to have some fun on the trip.

That's a beautiful photo! My friend and I are leaving Monday (Aug 29) for a four-day road trip to the Adirondacks, and then again beginning Sept 23rd. We go every year (Usually Lake George and Lake Placid areas) but plan to check out Saranac Lake during one of the excursions - probably the second trip.

I was going to comment on this image before I posted my thoughts. But I decided to see what others saw. I was going to say I liked the position of the canoe. The cloud reflections and the overall composition. I never picked up on the white line. So once you corrected that I think I am going with the revision. Subtle change, but effective.

Subtle is often very important. Thanks for offering your opinion.

What a great photo. It has a comforting atmosphere about it.

The second version is better as the original shoreline is harsh, affecting the tranquility of the image. You did a great job fixing it.

Thanks for sharing!

Thank you. I really appreciate that. I'm definitely going to print it and hang it; and I'm also going to enter it in competition. It will be interesting to see how it does.

It may have been frustrating but you certainly didn't come how empty handed. This is a great shot in so many ways.
