I think Tamron will do the update for free. You’d just have to pay shipping.

Some large/better photo shops can do the firmware updates - check with a few near you.

Your info is extremely useful
I have some time to think about this and maybe wait a year or two until the next best comes out.....
And maybe since it will probably be my last huge investment, it would be worth it.
Thanks

Why is a crop frame mirrorless the obvious best choice.
Size and weight? Better quality picture? Better Resolution?
Thanks again

More "reach".

Just answering your question, not endorsing the idea.

I have an old D800 and only two lenses AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm/f3.5-5.6G ED VR and a Tamron SP150-600mm f/5.6-6.3 Di VC USD Model A011

Looking towards a mirrorless but not in my immediate future
Thought the Nikon mirrorless Z7 II with a FTZ adapter would work for my 28-300 Not sure of the Tamron

The Canon mirrorless EOS R6 would be a logical competitor but much more expensive because I would need new lenses???? (not sure of that)

I mostly take pictures of my birds with my Tamron zoomed all the way out and use a dx crop to get a digital magnification on my focal length to about 900..

Used to shoot manual but am switching to priority mode with a auto iso.

Not totally camera tech savy but would appreciate any comments / recommendations in "plain speak"
I realize the cameras may be above my current level but think I have it in me to learn. This will probably be my last camera and will essentially be the purchase of a lifetime for me.

For now, because mirrorless camera's are coming out so fast and new one's hit the market each year, I would continue to use what you have for birds with your Tamron, continue to study new camera's as they come out, and when your ready to switch, you will have a pretty good idea where to go.
By the way, Sony was the first out with a complete line of mirrorless equipment, if I were you, I would also check them out, in my opinion, they are still the leader (for now) with the a1.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

My recommendation based on recent personal experience is this. Re-think the Z7 II. It's a lot more expensive and you don't need the 47 megapixels unless you are going to print billboard size. I bought a "like new" Z6 with less than 100 clicks at a very good price about 6 months ago and I am loving it. I would like to have the Z6 II which has dual processors but will set back and wait till the right deal comes along.

Spoken by one that apparently doesn’t shoot birds. That 45.7mp isn’t just for large prints, it’s also to allow deeper cropping when you don’t have the reach you need.

Linda, as you study in making your decision take a look at Canon's R7 coupled with an RF100-400, light, fast and affordable.

Three things .....smaller/lighter telephoto lenses for the same field of view as full frame, greater pixel density than full frame - so that even if you cropped FF, you would still have more pixels on target with crop frame, cheaper initial cost.

Is FF ultimately better ? Yes. - BUT, you better have very deep pockets $$$$ and lots of muscle.

This is generally a good idea - except it only gets you to 600mm equiv. and you NEED to get to 840mm equiv. or MORE. I am not aware of a 1.4X extender that works with that lens ....

Linda- I have the Canon R6 and R7 cameras and am very happy with both. The auto focus systems on those cameras are excellent. When I first got the R6 I was using the Canon mount 150-600 mm lens with adapter and it worked very well. But that was a lot of bulk and weight with camera, lens, adapter. That may not be an issue for you but many switching to mirrorless are also trying to go smaller and lighter including me. The R7 is slightly smaller than the R6 but still very comfortable to hold. Both cameras have deep hand grips making them comfortable to hold for the long haul. Not knowing your budget it's hard to make a recommendation although there is something to be said for starting new with lens and camera rather than piecing together what you already have and making your next camera purchase primarily based on that. Especially if this is your "lifetime purchase".

The new Canon RF 100-400 mm lens is compatible with both the 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverters as are the 600 mm and 800 mm f 11 lenses. With the 600 mm f 11 lens no T/C is necessary to get to 900 mm equiv focal length although a sunny climate is essential.
