I recall there was a Nikkormat camera in the early sixties that had a fixed zoom lens.
It wasn't very robust. I was told it was made by Mamiya. Also the Nikkormat EL
became the Nikon EL because its build quality was more like the quality of a Nikon.

The FM was to replace the Nikkormat Ft series. The FE was to replace the Nikkormat EL series. But Nikon discontinued both the FM, FM2, FM2n, FE, FE2 for a long time before they reintroduced the FM3a which was really an FE2 with full manual mechanical shutter speeds. Nikon had problem sourcing some components like the gavanometer (the exposure meter needle) as by then almost nobody used them any more.

i consider the fm2n to be just as good if not better than the fm3

I have a bunch of film cameras - several Canon T90's an a1 av1 and two at-1s. Then Pentax k-1000 along with a neat zoom lens by Tamron. I also have several digital cameras but my first love is my collection of film cameras

The FM3a is closer to the FE2 than FM2n. It has the same kind of meter display and it has aperture priority mode. They called it the FM3a because it has the full range of mechanical shutter speeds which work without battery.

The Nikkormat series were Nikon made. Before that Nikon had the Nikkorex f made by Mamiya.

My first SLR was a Nikkormat, but I don't think it had anything to do with the Nikon FM3, which was released much later.

They are definitely connected, just one model generation apart. The FMs were simply miniaturized Nikkormats.

My personal fave of the half dozen FM variants was the FE2. Reeeeally great user interface, only 2 modes: M and A.

It was identical to the Ricoh Singlex.
The Singlex even used the F mount.
IOW, not a Mamiya.

The Nikkorex and Singlex were really quite the sorry assed clunkers.

I avoided any "Nikkormat" because I hated the name. When they came out with them, I bought a NIKON FM, NIKON FE, later NIKON FM2, NIKON FE2. The FE's were great cameras, but both later failed, the FM's are still working.

Wasn't the Nikkormat called the Nikomat in Japan and elsewhere except N. America?.

Nik was Japan. Nikk was USA but I'm not sure about how they were designated anywhere else. There was a reason for this but I don't remember what that was. I have one of each, along with an F and F5. I love using them.

We are already so far removed from the prehistoric era of film cameras that even the experienced Jerry confused FM3A (made in 2001-2006) with the Nikkormat (made in 1965)!

Speak for yourself. Some of us are still quite proficient with those "prehistoric" cameras.

It was! My parents hosted a Japanese college student in 1973-75. She had one.

The Nikkormat and FM series fell into the same market segment… in other words, entry level Nikon F mount SLRs. There’s a direct lineage there.

That's the reason Nikon discontinued the Nikkormat and made the FM/FE series and move the shutter speed dial on top. Doesn't cost more but customers perceived as higher quality cameras.
