I can't thank you enough for all of this wonderful information. We will be there from the last week of September through the first week of October. My bride and I will write down all of this information and begin planning for a wonderful time in the Smokies. Again, I can't thank you enough.

God Bless

Sure thing. Have a great time!!

Thank you so much, from the few responses that I've received it seems that way.

Be sure to take a trip to Cades Cove. It is a 11 mile loop road. There's a lot of old homesteads and churches along the loop including wildlife (bears, deer, turkeys, etc.)

I went to college in Eastern TN in the mid 1960's. Gatlinburg was then a quaint town to visit. I haven't been there since but many people have told me that it's nothing but a tourist trap now. If that's your bag have fun.

Not at all, we're from Houston and the whole point of this vacation is to get far away from tourists traps and get back to nature. Photography is my passion, specifically wildlife and landscapes. So, I'll be taking all three camera bodies (D500, D850 and D4s) and several lenses.

You might want check out seasonal festivals occurring that time of year in the mountain towns of Blowing Rock, Boone, Waynesville, Banner Elk, all in North Carolina and in Jonesborough or Roan Mountain in Tennessee.

Cherokee, NC is a little more than an hour from Pigeon Forge. It’s worth a visit to learn abut the native American culture. The reservation and its people want us to understand the Cherokees’ tragic story.

In college I camped in the Red River Gorge at the Tenn/Ky border.

That place was amazing...

I failed to mentioned Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail in Gatlinburg. It's a one way loop road 6 miles long. Also some old homesteads and wildlife. From my experience it is no where near as crowded as Cades Cove.

If you decide to go, once you get a little ways into the park the road will fork, make sure you go right or you're end up on the quick exit route and miss everything.
