Cherokee, NC is a little more than an hour from Pigeon Forge. It’s worth a visit to learn abut the native American culture. The reservation and its people want us to understand the Cherokees’ tragic story.

Thanks for that info., my mom was part Cherokee and that would be a great visit to take in. We will be there two weeks so I'm hoping that will be enough time to take in quite a few of the wonders of Tennessee.

I failed to mentioned Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail in Gatlinburg. It's a one way loop road 6 miles long. Also some old homesteads and wildlife. From my experience it is no where near as crowded as Cades Cove.

If you decide to go, once you get a little ways into the park the road will fork, make sure you go right or you're end up on the quick exit route and miss everything.

Okay, the wife has that on her list but we will make sure to go right at the fork. Thanks my friend for the info.

You have a lot on the list and I would agree that all are great ideas, but your time will be short and especially since you will be there when the color change is drawing a lot of folks to the mountains. Certainly a great time to get there, but the crowds getting in/out can be really bad. The idea mentioned about going through Wears Valley and thru Townsend when going to Cades Cove is a good one. If you go to Clingman's Dome, recently renamed to Kuwahi which is related to the original Cherokee name for the peak, it is the highest point in the GSMNP and you will have to go through Gatlinburg and NOT through Wears Valley/Townsend to get there.

Once you get through Gatlinburg, you will immediately be entering the park and will first come the Sugarlands Visitor's Center where you can learn more about the park as well as how far away things are, time to get there, advisories, good hikes, sites, etc. The rangers are always great advisors for whatever your reason to be there. For photography, there are endless places along the streams that are always along the highway as well as many waterfalls.

If you go over the top of the Smokies and into NC you will be on the side where most of the elk hangout. I say most because they are starting to get on the East side of the park as well. There are numerous short hikes off of any of the roads, referred to "quiet walkways" that are very short, very accessible and usually have some nice feature to see as well, or just a place to get away from all the other sounds.

I'm sure you will both have a great time. I've never been in the park and regretted going. I've sometimes regretted the drive out or through areas to get there though. Pigeon Forge is generally a high volume tourist location with Dollywood and the like in that area.

Be sure to post some of your pics when you get the chance.

Another photo idea from a member of our camera club is On the Cades cove loop park at either the first or second parking lot on your left past the Cades Cove Missionary Baptist Church. This will be viewing east and provides spectacular sunrises in the mountains surrounding the valley. You will have to be at the gate to the Cades cove loop before 7 am when they open it. You should have time to drive to this point before sunrise over the mountains.
Also I found out that September is the last Wednesday the loop is closed to automobiles. If you ride a bike or rent one there this is an awesome option

I will certainly post photos although I will have to get with my HH family to figure it out because I have never posted photos here. I will be taking all three DSLRs and a good variety of lenses so I'm anticipating some really great photo opportunities. Again, I want to thank you for all of the information and suggestions. I wish it were possible to meet my HH family because you people are a rare breed in this crazy, sick world in which we live......a breath of fresh air.

Okay, I got it. We will be making a list of all of the places you guys have suggested. Most of the places that have been recommended were on my wife's list but there have been several that were not. Also, places to stop for photo opps like the one suggested here is great because you can only find places like that from those who have been there. Thanks my friend.

Again, my UHH family I come in need of directions. My wife and I are planning our vacation in the Tennessee Smokie mountains. We will be staying in Pigeon Forge. We will be there for two weeks and would love to know the sites to see and photograph. This will be our first trip to Tennessee so we will have plenty of time to see as much as we can in our two week stay. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pigeon Forge is a great place. Down the 'Parkway' follow into Gatlinberg. There is a lot to do in G'burg. Cades Cove is another place to visit. There are a number of National Parks and very picturesque drives. Heading down any road will usually lead you to a land of great surprises to photograph. Enjoy and have lot of fun.

Clingmans Dome is not for the faint of cardio. It’s a one mile uphill slope to the top!
At Cades Cove there are a lot of buildings that have parking.
I go through in the early morning before the clouds make it an almost impossible journey. One afternoon we drove by and a warning sign stated that ‘from this point it will be three hours to the entrance of Cades Cove.’ Once inside the drive is two hours without traffic. The one advantage is that the road is a one way loop. One day it is closed to foot and bicycle traffic only until about 10 am.
