I want a ferrari, a porsche and a harley... I can afford a ford Ka. As for cameras, I want an all singing all dancing Canon but in reality I could only afford to upgrade to a Canon 550 once they stopped making them.

So Before anyone can advise you on where to go, it would be helpful to know where you are now.

Camera brands are like so many other personal opinions...you like what you do. I use canon and my best mate uses nikon and to hear us talking, it sounds like we really don't think much of each other's mental abilities. Not true but that's what it sounds like. Recently he was away to Cyprus and didn't want to risk taking his Nikon with him. So I loaned him my pocket Fuji 6.5mp because not to take any camera would have been a sin.

I'm still envious of some of the photos he took with it.

Bottom line - it's the photographer's eye as much as the camera.

And I love my Canon SX40 and know that it is capable of far more than what I will ever need! Great close-ups, awesome landscapes and very good with low light portraits as well!!

Alecia,

Why not go to a number of camera stores and talk to the folks there about your wishes, wants and possibilities. Take some time and think about it. That is most important! And ask about the future of the investment you are considering. These peopIe are into their product. They understand them and they will work to understand you. And you will become quite capable of spotting snake oil sales pitches in the process.
You are going to get a ton of personal preferences here, much of it not really substantial research as much as partially understood opinion. And even some terribly impolite annoyance. But that's all part of making this investment. And don't be intimidated. you have made a big choice in wanting to upgrade equipment. That in itself says you are looking for more in this artistic study. Be patient and go for it.
I shoot Canon only but the Nikon folks on here have one of the strongest points to be made in that Nikon lenses are transferable to new models. Most Canons are not.
Good luck in your research.

Suggest moving up to a bridge camera first. It may be enough or in another year, a bridge camera can be a great back up camera if you go full out with dslr's and lenses. Canon, and Nikon offer well thought of bridge cameras for under $500. Sony, Panasonic, and Olympus have their own versions as well.
Entry level dslr's are Canon t4i, Nikon 5100, or 3200. Next step would be Canon 60D, or 7D, Nikon D7000 which are all cropped sensor cameras. If you want full sensor cameras, your budget will need to increase significantly as the least expensive full sensor models I am aware of hover around the $2000 mark, body only or maybe with a kit lens.
Another option could be to check with manufacturers who offer refurbished models of cameras and lenses in various models.
Canon has a buyer loyalty program. Do not know if Sony offers the same. Worth a phone call though. Hope this helps a little.

Funny you should ask because Ken Rockwell has a breakdown of the "best" camera in each category.

In August you were just getting started in a NEW hobby and now your wanting "the best" camera? Likely the "best camera" for you is the one you have.

Go take at least a few hundred photos with it, a few thousand would be better. Learn to use it, wear it out then maybe look for a step up?

I love photography, motorcycles and golf. No amount of money will improve skill set in any of them, just time, effort and practice. Training can be a big help too and that costs but equipment seldom does until what you have wont do what your trying to do.

Hasselblad make pretty good cameras but you'd still need a lens or three:

I considered getting a pair of Hassys, but they're kinda big. If I went walking around with a pair of Hasselblads hanging from my shoulders, people might think I was a rich snob. :D

And to add more suspense, I just bought. A Nikon cool pix p7700. I came from ancient film times with Pentax then 6 years ago a couple of p&s ( Canon $ Nikon ). I'm really pleased with this described as the current top Nikon p&s but I like all the external controls, acts as commander for slave flashes, can take a great plug in mic for shooting video, built in physical ND filter takes external filters, AND STILL FITS IN ALL MY JACKET POCKETS!

Agree - The helpful UHH folk need some detail and for the quote - an Aston Martin would be fine for you , available in Nikon livery of your choice and Park Automatic Supercharge Manual.
