[quote=Sonyphil]We are planning a September trip to Maine and would like suggestions as to where to visit on the coast in addition to Bar Harbor.
Nice spots are Camden, Rockland, and Popham Beach in Phippsburg. There's a beautiful beach and Fort down by the point near Spinney's Restaurant. Also York Beach- Nubble Light House

Camden Is breath takingly beautiful on the coast and the harbor is what many photographers dream about. I've been in Miami for 10 years but lived in New England until 2012. I think you will love Camden. Camden also offers many whale watching boat excursions and given the cold north Atlantic water you won't be disappointed. Hope you have a great trip.

If you get to Lubec check out The Inn on the Wharf. A super place to stay and great food in their restaurant “The Wharf.” If you have your passports go across the bridge to Campobello where you can visit Roosevelt’s summer “cottage” and at the tip of the island is a beautiful lighthouse. Would love for you to post pics after your trip.
Exactly what I did a couple of years ago...The Wharf too, you are right
Bar Harbour was always one of the places I loved to go. Seafood was superb, ice cream at this old fashioned stand. Good little stores. And don't miss Jordans Pond house as you leave Acadia. Southwest Harbor has a great little restaurant, Can;t think of the name.

Thank you all for all the wonderful suggestions, I think we'll have to spend the balance of the year in Maine!
Just be warned, many new Mainers (myself included) started coming here on vacation and then eventually moved here year round.

Thanks in advance for your responses!
Be aware -- to go up Cadillac Mountain now requires a reservation. Last fall I didn't know that and was turned away when trying to visit. About 25 years ago when I first went to Acadia that wasn't the case. Also if you plan to avail yourself of lobster dinners while there be aware of how things are priced. A restaurant may offer a dinner for 25.00 but you decide to go to one advertising 18.00 dinners only to find if you read the small print, it will indicate that is the price per lb. for the lobster. You could end up paying more for a dinner you thought was less expensive.
Port Clyde, Rockland, Rockport & Camden area.
Port Clyde is home to Marshall Point Light and is a real working harbor. The Farnsworth museum in Rockland has the finest collection of three generations of Wyeth's. Rockport is one of the prettiest harbors in Maine and stop in at the Peter Ralston gallery. He is one of Maine's best known photographers (a Wyeth family friend since childhood) and a great story teller. Actually, skip Camden, it has become a tourist trap.
I’m going to take a different approach. Try Greenville. It’s about 2 hours from Bangor.
I went there specifically looking to photograph moose and found many.
We took a tour guide the first day. I saw where he took us and it’s basically just local roads that are a lot of logging roads. We stayed a week and every morning I was on the road at 4am driving those roads until about 11 am. Saw lots of moose. Once my wife started seeing my pictures she started getting up and went with me.
Basically follow Main Street to lily bay road and stay to the right side of the lake. You’ll see many logging roads. Take any of them.
Also saw a lot of foxes.
Of course all the other places mentioned are great also. I just prefer wildlife also.
Wow, I can't believe how generous all you huggers were in responding to my request. Thank you very much!
We decided to extend our stay with all the helpful suggestings.
We love the Camden area. Very charming.
Also Pimaquid Point Lighthouse.
You must not be familiar with Cany. We all enjoy his narration to his postings. Cany's wit and humor is unsurpassed. Please consider that when reading his response to the Maine question.
My apologies my comment was intended as a "Quote Reply" to kcooke.

There is a restaurant just across the water that surrounds Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. If you are in the area for a meal just after sunset, take a powerful flashlight out to the shore, set up your camera for a shot of the lighthouse, and do a time exposure painting the island with your light.
