I'm traveling north from New Jersey in September to Maine. I'm planning to spend a few days in Cape Cod/Hyannis and Province Town, then traveling to Boston for a quick stay and from there to Maine, Bar Harbor, Cadillac Mountain, Arcadia. I'm looking for ideas/suggestions of other points of interest that I should consider either in Maine and for the return trip back to New Jersey. Thanks in advance for any ideas. ~Kevin

Lubec is a neat little town. Easternmost point in the US. About two and a half hours from Bar Harbor.
If you take your Passports you can take the bridge to Campobello Island in Canada. If they're letting us in now....

Southeast of Boston is Plimoth Patuxet Museums (Plymouth Plantation).

Of course it depends on what you like to see.......

Warrens Lobster House in Kittery, Maine, which is just over the NH/Maine border. Ogunquit, Maine, which is kinda the Provincetown of Maine. Walk the Marginal Way and get some really nice views looking out to sea. One of the end points of the Marginal Way is Perkins Cove, which has some unique shops to browse through, and should provide some good photo ops as well. Harbor candy shop, in downtown Ogunquit, and La Pizzeria right across the street from the candy shop, are 2 of my “stop in every time I’m there” places. Hope your trip turns out to be exceptional, and that you enjoy it.

Camden, Brooklin, Belfast. Consider a ferry tour of the islands in Portland. Portland Head Light.

Northeast/Southwest Harbors near Acadia.

Point Lookout in Lincolnville is a great place to spend the night near Camden; check out the bridge a few miles north of there.

Three hour schooner cruise out of Camden.

If you’re a fan of the Wyeth family check out the Farnsworth museum in Rockland ME., visit the Olsen farm in nearby Cushing, take the ferry out to Monhegan Island from nearby Port Clyde for a spectacular Island experience.

Kevin, all of these suggestions are excellent. Some of these areas are stunning. But, unless you get a shot with exceptional light, they all will have been done before. Good for memories, OK for photo books.
I suggest you could try for something different. Go for continuity, a commonality in all the areas, which is the "locals."
If you have done street photography, you know what I mean. If you haven't, you might have to get out of your comfort level. In fact, you can go down to the various docks in Barnegat Bay to practice.
One hint: you can't have family members rushing you.
I would be happy to give you more hints in a PM if you're interested.

On the culinary side, if you like lobster rolls (I do not), my wife and I stopped at Shain’s of Maine, in Sanford. Not fancy, but my wife said great lobster roll and the ice cream was excellent. A little inland from the Wells area. Worth the drive. Also, if you’re visiting Acadia, also worth the drive over to the Schoodic Peninsula. Part of the park, but far less crowded. Got the tip from another UHHer, who is a local. Enjoy.

Screw Auger Falls (sp!) near the Maine/NH border. Remember it snows early and often in the Northeast.

And while you're in that area, you might go to the Owl's Head Transportation Museum that houses working vintage aircraft and vehicles of all kinds. One of the slightly lesser photographed lighthouses, is the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse that's in a beautiful setting (aren't they all!).

First question, How long in Bar Harbor area? I could probably spend a week there with no problems. Boothbay Harbor is on the way to Bar Harbor, neat area, Lubec is a LONG trip from Ellsworth, the turn off from the road to Bar Harbor, check a map, BTW use but don't' trust your GPS, check a map first, maybe ask a local for the best route. We go almost evry year, great scenery, great food, nice people. I'm putting up photos of our trip from May this year now on Flickr and FAA if your interested. Enjoy , Bob.

I second this recommendation. I’m a big fan of the Museum - check out their schedule of air shows. Everything in the Museum can be driven or flown and is.

You might want to shop around in the Photo Gallery here at UHH. Here are some of my own contributions there, but surely you can find other good suggestions. I might suggest a ride down to the end of Harpswell Island for lunch at the Dolphin Restaurant and photos at the Marina.

A few years back my wife and I took a trip to New England and had a few adventures...we stopped in a little town called Newberryport Mass. We enjoyed walking around by the water. Newburyport has a long history, so there are plenty of sights to see — one of which is the Custom House Maritime Museum, where you can see a collection of maritime art, model clipper ships, displays of famous shipwrecks, the history of the Coast Guard, and more. This was one o my favorite places we saw on the trip...

We were headed to Smugglers Notch Resort to meet my sister who was there from California...

Whatever you decide to do have a great time...

Chuck

It's close to the New Hampshire border and a fairly long trip from the coast, however. But if you do go there, make sure you stop at the Corkscrew Falls.
