I would have never caught that! There are 3 version of the EM 1. The Mark 1, 2 and 3. So, no, I do not mean what is stated in the title. I am looking at Mark 2 and 3 on my desk as I type. I have manuals for the 2 and the 3 and might be able to help out. I am not sure on the Mark 1.

Reset is supposed to reset all the settings. Well if it's working now then keep using it.
What ever version of the camera you have, get Darrell Young's book on it. They are indispensable. Also, look at Robin Wong's site on setting up (in general) Oly cameras. Very helpful. As well as I know these cameras, every once in a while, I get totally flummoxed on something and need to look it up.

That’s what I always thought, as well. I can only speak for Canons, but after resetting a misbehaving point and shoot, I realized only a portion of the setting were set back to default. Reading the manual listed functions that don’t get reset. I called Canon and asked if there was a way to reset back to “factory settings.” The tech said, “no.”
Perhaps the camera and/or the lens need a software update. Download the Olympus app and update both.
Looks to me like it's time for a visit to the repair dept. of the company that made the camera.

Hi , can anyone help..
Used my OMD -Em-1 today for first time ..
I bought it Second Hand .
I have fitted an Olympus 14-150 lens .
Started in P mode took a few shots outside after that noticed that the Shutter button was doing nothing ... after lots of fiddling about I found that the camera will work but only on Auto Mode.. on P mode there is a flashing memory card in the screen when I push the shutter button but this is not there on Auto. took quite a few shots in Auto , then it stopped working in any mode !.. Changed the battery and card ... but still the same ... when I got home and turned it on , same thing Auto only with flashing Memory card symbol on back screen .... Any help please ... Seems to me that is only focusing on auto ...

Even though Robin Wong is no longer an Olympus/OMDS ambassador, he will not stop shooting Olympus/OMDS any time in the foreseeable future. A good source for info. Factory reset is the best for a used camera not from a retailer.
For those just reading OP solved the problem. It’s working now. See Lakabulla’s post on page 1, about 11 posts down from the top.

Yep! Me too!
I have the OM-D EM5 mII Olympus has long model names. Lol.
I have also had good luck “asking Google” for help when I’m stuck!

yes on the camera it only says EM-1
The E-M1 IS the "Mark I". Except that they didn't call it that, they called it the OM-D E-M1. Period.
If there is a button cell on that camera, replace it with a fresh one (Many cameras use a small lithium battery to back up the clock/calendar and custom settings. When that goes bad, things can get flaky).
If there is a menu setting to "Reset" menu settings to factory defaults, try that.
If there is a firmware upgrade on OM Digital Solutions' web site, read the instructions for firmware upgrade at least three times and do the upgrade exactly as instructed.
Finally, remove the lens and clean the contacts between the lens and body using a lint-free cloth lightly moistened in a high percentage of isopropyl alcohol (92% or more).
If none of those things work, find an authorized service center...
If you don't have the manual for that camera, you can download it from OM Digital Solutions' website.
Good luck. It can be very frustrating learning the Oly menu system, and there are many ways things can seem not to work, and it's simply a matter of a menu setting. But that can be difficult to determine, All of the above comments are good. Hang in there.
Once you figure it out and get the hang of it, learn to use the super control panel and "My Menu".

I have not been back to this site (UHH) for months. Left in disgust.----but I also have an Olympus--Em-1. I have taken only a dozen photos with it in a decade. Recently I used it and went over the voluminous settings. Then IT DEFAULTED TO THE SAME PROBLEMS described about. I tried everything--I have both m4/3s lenses as well as adapters for 4/3s and OM mount lenses (also three batteries) --The camera operates sporadically. I tried everything and there is no "factory reset button." I tried to contact Olympus---BUT AS YET HAVE NO ANSWER. I can assume it was a lemon! Since those Pen bodies are now cheaply priced, I purchased what looks like the most capable of the lot---"the EP-3" on eBay. I expect delivery tomorrow. I also purchased an electronic viewfinder---the model 3--for $67. So I will see if this works for a lightweight carry-around capable pro-style camera? One problem with the Ep-1 in best of times---it did not have a notice when "in focus" such as my five Sigma cameras have. The focus mechanisms are supposed to be much improved on the EP-3 and both the EP-1 as mirroless cameras can magnify for manual focus. But it didn't have an icon or light which told you when focus was on target and fixed. Anyway---it appears the EP-1 is a lemon and short of sending back to Olympus repair--won't work. And that prospect is not money smart.----ew

So, with any luck, weve now got only about nine more pages left to fill ?
So---without paging through all that, how was it solved. My EP-1 problems which sounded the same---intermittent operations of all screens has not been solved and I have written of the camera body.---ew
