Hi , can anyone help..
Used my OMD -Em-1 today for first time ..
I bought it Second Hand .
I have fitted an Olympus 14-150 lens .
Started in P mode took a few shots outside after that noticed that the Shutter button was doing nothing ... after lots of fiddling about I found that the camera will work but only on Auto Mode.. on P mode there is a flashing memory card in the screen when I push the shutter button but this is not there on Auto. took quite a few shots in Auto , then it stopped working in any mode !.. Changed the battery and card ... but still the same ... when I got home and turned it on , same thing Auto only with flashing Memory card symbol on back screen .... Any help please ... Seems to me that is only focusing on auto ...

You might check to see if there is any way to reset it to the default settings like on many DSLRs. Possibly something such as it recording large RAW file on P and smaller jpeg on auto. What kind of batteries? A proprietary one or simple AAs? If the former, How old are they? Many rechargeable batteries will go dead but after setting unused for a bit will recover just enough for a few more shots.

If you have a manual you might check it or google the flashing card display for its meaning. May have something to do with the card itself or maybe the batteries don’t have enough power to record the image. Check the simple stuff first, batteries, card, battery terminals for any crud or corrosion and so on. The P mode might be set with the iso or shutter speed so far out of whack to prevent it from recording anything. Also, my old Fuji won’t work with ordinary AA batteries, it demands I use alkaline, which supply more amperage than cheap carbon zinc batteries.

Working in one mode but not another is a good sign that at least it is able to work sometimes. Better than not at all.

There are many possibilities. In "P", the camera will probably not take a picture if it can't focus, if it can't get a proper exposure, or any of several other issues. The same goes for most all modes other than "A".

Try to see if the shot taken in Auto has any of those issues by examining the EXIF data.

update ... whilst trying to re activate the camera ... I pressed the Fn2 button and it seems to have come back to life with P and other settings working again ... wonder what it could have been set to .. Maybe auto default ... I have now not assigned Fn2 to anything untill I understand it fully ... seems that was it ? fingers crossed ... Though I did do a Reset before this and though that it would have wiped out the previous owners settings .... Thanks loads Everyone

I have been shooting with an EM-5 for many years. I am sorry I can't figure this one out. I have not seen the behavior you describe. Something is definitely amiss. That flashing memory card icon is wrong. That icon flashes for a few seconds after taking a shot. Then it goes out. It sounds like the camera can't detect the memory card. You tried two cards ... You know they are both good. Have you tried to format the cards in the Olympus? What happens?

Some other thoughts:
Have you tried other modes, such as manual? I think I agree with Billy, it might be time to try a factory reset. Also you could try re-loading the firmware. Have you tried cleaning the memory card contacts?

Try a different lens. Try cleaning the lens contacts. Contact the seller ask him if he experienced such behavior? Do you have a camera store nearby that sells Olympus? Go there with the camera. Lastly contact Olympus support.

my bet is that it is a Mark 1 or the first version. Look up how to do a factory reset and see if that works. Also, I think since there was a lot of fiddling around, you may have changed some of the settings (maybe??) for instance, if the camera is not on focus, it will not fire.

Since you just purchased the thing, a factory reset seems in order.

Reset is supposed to reset all the settings. Well if it's working now then keep using it.
