Looks like a scam to me.

Yep. If they won't meet you in a safe place, they are scammers. Police stations in the U.S. and Canada allow on-line transactions to be carried out by the station. When I've sold on CL, I have buyer meet me at my community clubhouse. There are people around, and many of them know me.

When I sold my travel trailer and two vehicles, it was cash only. Met buyers at my son's house and he scanned every last $20 bill to be make sure they were not counterfeits.

I had some nice leather men's moccasin leggings to sell on CL while staying briefly in Tucson. I had buyer meet me in front of a Costco. A fellow and his dog were waiting for someone on a bench, so I asked him if I could sit there and struck up conversation so the buyer would think we were together. šŸ˜

I told the guy to send me his location for directions to my place along with his phone number so I could provide him information. I also told him I prefer doing business in person at the local bank.
So far no response.
I sensed a scam just by the name provided and email address

IT IS A SCAM!!!! My add was for a sofa, and I got a response almost word for word to the one you got. My sofa, a 20 year old hida-a-bed in good condition was listed for $250 (about twice what I thought I would get). I got the response, very similar to yours. They told me they would mail me a check and they did. For $3500! the sofa didn't cost me that much new. (By about three times). Within an hour of getting the check I got a call asking if I had cashed it. I told them I didn't have a chance to go to the bank, and they said "Oh, no, you can cash it immediately online. The extra was for shipping it. Someone would show up to pick it up. So now it clicked, I would "cash it" online, someone would show up asking for a check to ship it, the online money would disappear and my check would be gone. So I told him I would cash the check at my own bank and not online. Never heard from them again. I didn't even bother to cash the check.

I always put these 2 lines in my listings:

Cash and carry only. Shipping requests will be ignored.

Scam. I sell breeding livestock on line. ā€œCattleā€. We get those fairly frequently. Our cattlemenā€™s association warned us against that type of transaction

I think if after you receive a PayPal payment, it should be good and can ship the item out?

But you don't get a paypal payment from them. They can't scam you that way, they send a check that you are supposed to cash online, don't fall for it.

I guess check is the biggest source of scam. Cash is king here.
